Retailers in the Twin Cities and coastal towns pause for Christmas with 1965 last sales, early closures, and holiday schedules. Biddeford Saco and Old Orchard Beach offices and post offices adopt shortened hours, while manufacturing plants shift to half days and schools remain empty through the week.
Saco Police Chief Raymond J. Kerry 57 of 127 Common St announces resignation for health reasons effective today after a leave since last June. He served 20 years with the department including six years as patrolman and 14 as chief, guiding traffic education and modernizing equipment. He led the force under Police and Fire Commission and held statewide police posts in 1957 and York County association roles.
Flames of undetermined origin destroyed the Tide Inn and gutted the California Fruit Co on East Grand Ave in Old Orchard Beach early today. The Whiteway restaurant suffered smoke and water damage while Biddeford and Saco crews aided, with losses estimated up to 75000 dollars. Firefighters contained the blaze to the immediate area two hours after the alarm.
The Bidd ford Saco Journal will not publish tomorrow in observance of the Christmas holiday. All departments will be closed.
