Vatican City AP reports Pope Paul VI strikes the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica with a silver hammer to inaugurate a Holy Year of reconciliation. The ceremony precedes the Christmas Eve Mass and will be televised in 45 nations.
James Angleton told the Associated Press he has resigned as head of CIA counterintelligence amid President Ford ordering a report on alleged domestic spying. Three congressional committee chairmen announced investigations to begin when Congress returns next year.
The Ford administration won a partial rollback of U S Steel price hikes and questions a further increase by U S Steel Corp as inflationary. Bethlehem Steel Corp meanwhile said its prices would rise about 2 percent to align with competition.

Melbourne police say John Thomson Stonehouse a 49 year old former British MP who disappeared in Florida entered Australia on a false passport and faces a Christmas Day court appearance. He was tracked to a Melbourne seaside suburb via Interpol and Perth airport records show he arrived December 10. He used the alias Markham and was held for questions at Melbourne.
