Christmas Highway Toll Seen Lower This Year

Howard Pyle of the National Safety Council says this Christmas will likely produce the safest highway period on record with an estimated toll between 550 and 750 deaths. As of Christmas Eve 6 p.m. to midnight, 304 traffic deaths were tallied nationwide, with 44 lives lost to fires and 37 to other accidents, totaling 385. Weather and fewer drivers are cited as factors. The council notes last year’s Christmas toll was 524 and the all-time high for a holiday is 706 in 1956, with 535 the WWII-era low in 1951.
