In 1890 a brash French runner John Beaudoin bragged of speed and brains. He bet friend Nelson Provencal he could beat a horse car to Old Orchard Beach on foot and would race if told the exact time, wagering five dollars on the outcome.
In hot July heat Beaudoin, a lean Frenchman, outpaced a horse car from Biddeford to the Beach, winning $5 after delays and a dog chase near Half Way. Provencal had wagered on his friend’s defeat but suffered a reversal as Beaudoin finished first on the summer run.
In Biddeford during 1895 a Chinese immigrant named Wang Lee opened a laundry in Meeds' Block with limited English. He saved money from long hours and a boiled rice diet. One Saturday night a man collected a linen bundle and Wang Lee asked for the 13 cents owed.
A large man tried to pass a Confederate $50 bill to Wang Lee in a shop. Lee changed it for 49.87, then later learned the note was fake. He tore it up, but officers insisted on preserving the fragments as evidence while the assailant fled.
A journal promotes a program where every child can access free items by collecting box tops. It invites boys and girls to participate, stating that one collected box top unlocks access to freely available goods or opportunities.
Congress and President Ford announce a tax compromise that prevents a January 1 tax increase. The six month extension keeps withholding rates similar to 1975, with relief for low income families and working individuals but critics warn added language is non binding. The Senate approved 72 to 7 and the House 372 to 10 before the deal was sent to the White House for signing.
In Vienna the 13 nation OPEC holds talks on simplifying how high quality oil premiums are set and to consider admitting new members. Iraq accused Kuwait of cutting premiums after a price rise, but overall consumer prices for OPEC oil may stay similar. Discussions also address applications from Zaire and Syria while Angola’s MPLA delegation studies joining prospects.
United States ranks sixth from the bottom in a World Federalists survey of how countries voted on world order issues at the United Nations General Assembly. Sweden had the best record while Albania and Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge regime ranked above the U.S. Keys of the World Association of World Federalists says the scoring reflects votes on 20 resolutions judged for contributions to world order.
Washington State University researchers seek antique air samples from museums junkyards and old vessels to test fluorocarbon effects on the ozone layer. They plan to compare pre 1930 sealed air with samples from the 1940s and 50s to map fluorocarbon distribution and natural sources.
