Army Reservists May Escape Regular Drills Under New Plan
Washington AP reports 181,600 enlisted Army Reservists could avoid weekly drills under a Defense Department plan merging Reserve units into the National Guard. Eligible members who served 4 to 10 months on active duty and owe up to six years reserve training may transfer to a pool rather than drill weekly, with some required for two weeks of annual training. Guard expansion to 550,000 and a 453,000 strong mobilization pool underpins the change. The new program aims to offer an alternative to two years of active service for those who opt out of Guard service.
