Ike Saluted By British Fleet At Sea

President Eisenhower received a ceremonial gun salute as the British Mediterranean fleet, led by Adm. Sir Alexander Bingley aboard the Tiger, passed within 600 yards of the U.S. Des Moines while Ike viewed from the rail. The scene occurred during his three continent goodwill tour before continuing toward Tunisia and the Western summit in Paris.

Troopers Face Court Martial For Deer Kill On Preserve

PORTLAND AP Two Maine state troopers faces general court martial in Augusta on charges of conduct unbecoming officers after being fined for deer killings on a game preserve. Richard C. Jones shot his second deer of the season and was fined $100 while Harold J. Robinson was fined $25 for hunting without a license.

Council Confirms Mahaney and Appoints Several Officials

The Executive Council approved AUGUSTA Hilary F. Mahaney of Saco for reappointment as judge of the Saco Municipal Court. It also confirmed Rowena Walden of Portland to the Board of Examiners in Physical Therapy, William B. Talbot of Machias as a decimus justice, Hortense B. Stevens of Auburn as state humane agent, and Donald A. Bonenfant, Matthew F. Sipowicz, and John B. Churchill as licensed detectives.

Castro Predicts Invasion In 1960, Castro Says

Fidel Castro warned of an invasion of Cuba next year as his military courts move swiftly. He spoke during a televised 42 hour address declaring the revolution would be defended with weapons in hand and criticized U S labor and race tensions while noting falling American tourism to the island. In Havana a tribunal sentenced Maj. Hubert Matos to 20 years for sedition and several defectors received prison terms while two Cubans were condemned to death for leading an anti Castro band.

Nee Nah Council Elects Frances Johnson Pocahontas

Frances Johnson was elected Pocahontas of Nee Nah council during the annual meeting at the Old Orchard Beach American Legion hall. Officers elected included Shirley Doe prophetess Erelyn Presley Wenonah Priscilla Bibber keeper of wampum Katharine Lemire collector of wampum Evelyn Lunder keeper of records Emery Bibber Powhatan Grace Hunter trustee for three years. Installation will occur January 5. A donation supported the school hot lunch program and ribbons program prizes were awarded. A Christmas party with gift exchange closed the meeting.

Civil War Vet Williams Remains in Critical Condition

Houston AP reports Walter W. Williams, the last surviving Civil War veteran, remained unchanged in health. His daughter Willie Mae Bowles said he is "not any better" while battling a fourth pneumonia attack since June. He has stayed under an oxygen tent since December 5.

LaCourse Submits Questions To State Auditing Official

Biddeford citizen investigator J Eugene LaCourse delivered a sealed envelope containing four questions to State Auditing official Michael Napolitano in the office of County Attorney Marcel Viger. Napolitano said contents would be reviewed against audit reports and the matter could be referred to the Attorney General if issues are found, otherwise the affair would be dropped. State auditors have been in Biddeford this week conducting the annual departmental records audit.

Cardinal Cushing to Receive St Francis Medal in Biddeford

Richard Cardinal Cushing of Boston is named 1960 St Francis Medal recipient and will receive the award May 1 at an academic convocation in St Francis College chapel. The event marks the first visit by a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church to the area.
