Airlines Win Permission To Cut Boston New York Fares
The Civil Aeronautics Board allowed Northeast and Eastern Airlines to reduce fares on Boston to New York flights as a test of no frill commuter service. Fares drop to as low as 9.52 dollars starting December 21 for Eastern off peak shuttle and Northeast standby service. The airlines had traded fare cuts, with Northeast proposing 2.86 dollars for stand by passengers and Eastern matching that in shuttle service. Chairman Alan S. Boyd said Northeast failed to prove economic justification but may meet Eastern’s off peak fares for competitive reasons.
