Washington AP reports the government will halt sales of poultry fattened with stilbestrol a hormone linked to cancer. Birds already on the market will be voluntarily withdrawn and consumers are told to discard skin liver and kidneys if they have stilbestrol treated poultry. No residues found in meat officials say.
AP reports a nationwide surge in Christmas spending with 24 city surveys predicting gains from 2 to 15 percent over 1958, signaling a record season. Merchants credit higher income, savings, steady prices, and easier credit, with cards boosting Los Angeles sales.
The Madisses of the Saco First Parish Congregational church combine election of 1960 officers with their annual Christmas party. The slate includes Florence Northrop president Ada Stackpole vice president Lois Currier secretary and Doris Stackpole treasurer. Installations set for January 21. The program featured the Annette Chapter Kitchenaires under Northrop. A covered dish supper preceded the meeting for 46 members and guests.
U S Rep James C Oliver of Maine filed for re election in 1960 with 1000 nomination forms. The 64 year old Cape Elizabeth Democrat formerly Republican served 1937 42 and 1958 against Hale with party switches and recounts. Mayor Peter A Garland of Saco is the other announced candidate, a Republican who lost to Hale in 1958 GOP primaries.
Saco police swiftly solved a break in at Russell Robbins Sr. home on Portland Road. Two 14yearold youths entered the house and stole a watch pens and a clock before所有 valuables were recovered. Juvenile court proceedings will be taken. Police Chief Raymond Kerry led the investigation and urged homeowners to notify police when leaving town. This was the second such report this week of vandalism at empty homes in Saco.

Benjamin Dodge and William H. Walker Jr., both of Lowell Massachusetts, were held on $1,000 bail to await court action on forgery charges. Dodge faces two counts of uttering forged checks and Walker two counts of forgery after police say they cashed two $100 checks and possessed 121 others believed stolen from the Portland Roofing Co.
Washington reports November employment down by over a million to 65,640,000 with unemployment rising nearly 400,000. The drop exceeds seasonal expectations but sets a record for November, while the jobless total trails the prewar high. Officials predict unemployment may rise to about 4 percent in early next year depending on seasonal factors.
