State Commission To Aid Saco In Sewer Work
The State Water Improvement commission will reactivate and speed processing of Saco’s federal and state aid for sewer construction. Mayor Peter A. Garland said Raeburn MacDonald, chief engineer, checked progress on Goose Brook pollution cleanup. A $45,000 bond referendum will be voted at Monday’s election to fund a Bearbrook sewage plant costing $90,000, with $45,000 town share and the rest from state and federal aid.

Indictments Hit Atlanta Federal Penitentiary Conspiracy
Two former federal employees and a group of inmates at the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary were indicted on charges of conspiring to transport illegal items in and out of the prison. Dolbys Seek Permit for Ice Rink in Saco Block
Lawrence and Byron Dolby of Saco won non opposition at a public hearing of the Zoning Ordinances Appeal Board to build an ice skating rink on land near Harrison venue and Dyer street. They may later add a swimming pool or pond. The site, once a brickyard and lumber yard passage, floods easily and previously housed a right of way. Preliminary parking for 20 to 30 cars was planned, with three entrances and a possible fence if commercial use proceeds. Health officials said the plan complies with city health laws and the board considered land use benefits for central Saco.

County Law Unit Sets State County Banquet Held in Biddeford
The York County Law Enforcement Officers association held its 10th annual banquet at Wonderbar steak house in Biddeford with 50 present. State Trooper Chester Emmons was elected president, succeeding Yvon Rondeau who became treasurer. Deputy Sheriff Charles Davis and Chief Elmer Hutchins were elected vice presidents, Edmund Cashen re elected secretary. The group plans a January dance with Rondeau chairing arrangements and will move meetings to the third Monday. Next meeting January 18 in Berwick. Philip Graves spoke on licenses and vehicle operation.
