In Royalston Massachusetts a westbound Boston and Maine freight derailed near Royalston Center dumping thirty eight boxcars into Millers River. No serious injuries reported though one crewman Lawrence F. Bura of Greenfield was treated and released. Trainmaster William Fury said a draw bar failure on car 14 caused the derailment amid heavy snowfall. Tracks were torn up for 200 to 300 yards and many cars were empty or damaged. About 20 hunters gathered at the scene as crews cleared the wreck.
Police said comedienne Martha Rave, 47, was treated at a Santa Monica hospital after an accidental overdose of sleeping pills. She reported taking eight tablets to her physician.
J Carroll Castello is named contracts manager for the Saco-Lowell New England Division. He will analyze and coordinate all communications and contracts with government entities for current and future defense business. Castello previously led Firestone’s New Bedford division and holds positions with industry and civic groups.
London AP Christine Keeler, 21, jailed for nine months after pleading guilty to perjury and conspiracy to frame a discarded lover. Paula Hamilton Marshall, 23, gets six months. housekeeper Olive Brooker, 56, placed on probation. Defence argues she was misused by powerful men.
