School Boycott Weakens in New Orleans as Integration Continues

In New Orleans, 15 to 17 white pupils attended William Frantz Elementary today, while one Negro girl enrolled in first grade faced taunts from demonstrators. At McDonogh No. 19, only three Negro girls joined first grade amid police patrols expanding to deter possible disruptions. The Louisiana Legislature approved state aid for private schools in response to the federal order, signaling efforts to resist integration.

Wells Youth Injured On Rabbit Hunt

A 15 year old Wells boy Wallace Stevens Jr was hospitalized after a rabbit hunting accident near the Higgins residence in Wells. The shot from a 20 gauge gun struck Stevens in both legs but did not break bones. The incident involved two other youths Kenneth and Curtis Grant and a dog. State Game Warden Libby Wells says minors may not hunt without an adult over 21.

Maine Democrats Air Election Loss

Senator Ed Muskie urged Maine Democrats at a State Democratic Committee meeting to stay the course and improve rather than abandon their values after November’s defeat. He cited factors like combined state and presidential races and new voting blocs as partial causes, and endorsed pursuing a progressive program with lessons from the loss. Coffin, defeated in hopes of unseating Gov Reed, said the party remains trusted by Maine people despite the defeat. Coffin could not attend due to his daughter’s tonsil surgery in Washington.

The Old Orchard Beach Democratic Social Club met at the VFW hall and elected Dwight McLeod as president Irene Cooper as secretary and Leo Larochelle as treasurer McLeod urged higher pay for teachers firemen and policemen and supported Civil Service open examinations for the police department He called for a straight Democratic ticket in Old Orchard Beach in March to oppose a straight Republican ticket.
