Justice Armand A. Dufresne denied Rodney C. Austin's petition for a writ of error. The Newcastle woodsman, who acted as his own counsel, claimed witnesses perjured themselves at his December trial. He was convicted on eight counts including rape and abduction in the October 1959 case involving 14 year old Sharon Simmons of Nobleboro and sentenced to life.
The Friendship Class of Saco United Baptist church held its December vestry meeting last night electing officers for another term. Re-elected were President Frank Whitten Vice President Merrill Thompson Secretary Isabelle Wilbur Treasurer Carl Ross Press Reporter Emma Lougee and Teacher Carleton Robbins. Standing committees named included Membership with details continued on page two.
A century-old landmark in New Orleans French Quarter burned early today after about 200 people evacuated a community theater inside. Firefighters fought a 27 hour blaze that threatened nearly a full downtown block as scores of firemen responded to the general alarm at Gluck's Restaurant near Canal Street. Four firefighters were treated at the scene.
Pope John XXIII described his 65 minute talk with Archbishop Geoffrey Fisher as moving only to the threshold of major problems but offering hope for eventual solutions. He spoke of cordiality and mutual understanding, while Fisher cautioned that unity does not imply reunion with Rome. Fire swept a two story frame farm house on a southern Maryland tobacco farm in freezing predawn darkness killing seven people and injuring none of the 17 asleep residents. Ten escaped by leaping from windows and a roof. one survivor slid down a TV antenna to safety. Names identified include Robert Dana Powell and Viola Powell, their three children James Henry Barbara Regina and John Allen, a grandson Joseph Powell and nephew Phillip G Yates. Survivors include five Powell daughters and five grandchildren. Rose Ella said her mother gave the alarm and urged others to jump.

The President's Commission on National Goals told Eisenhower that the 1960s will see billions more in government costs with taxes possibly rising. It cites higher military and foreign aid outlays, urban renewal, education funding, and loans and grants, plus expanded rural retraining and medical facilities. The report stresses shared tax responsibility but notes living standards may grow more slowly.
The Rev. Lawrence Dudink, 47, a Roman Catholic priest, pleaded guilty to abducting a 17 year old girl and was sentenced to three years in state prison. Dudink, former chaplain at St. Mary’s Hospital in Superior, admitted abducting Rosalie O’Connell of Gilbert Minnesota on November 8. A closed court session followed a reduction of the charge from kidnapping to abduction. Dudink, described as a reformed alcoholic by his missionary superiors, was arrested in a Phoenix motel with the girl. she was returned to her parents, Mr and Mrs Conrad O’Connell.

A dedicated bowling alley for the blind was unveiled at Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown. Justice William E. Powers, himself blind, rolled the first ball. The Bowlaide system uses magnets and floor switches to guide the bowler, with tactile protrusions and vibration indicating pin positions. The device, created by Arthur D. Little engineers and licensed to Inshikon Co., was donated by Thomas Sullivan of Milton for the 131-year-old school.
In Boston federal court, Atty. Samuel Abrams said nearly $750,000 of roughly $1,994,000 owed by industrialist Bernard Goldfine is being turned over to the U.S. Government under an escrow. Judge Wyzanski noted the sizable government lien casts doubt on Goldfine’s solvency while he remains hospitalized at St Elizabeths. A Washington hearing will decide his release for private treatment.
