An explosion at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Richland Washington injured one person and contaminated eight to ten others with radioactivity according to an Atlantic Richfield Hanford Co. spokesman. Details were unavailable as the Journal went to press.
Saco's Allied Chemical Sange Inc will close before mid September, plant manager Ralph Dow said. About 100 employees have been laid off already, with another 150 to follow as production winds down in canvas footwear and tennis shoe manufacturing.
The Pool Beach Association rejects Biddeford's plan to settle the seven acre parcel taken in 1973 and counters with a cooperative management proposal that the mayor calls far from the city's offer. Negotiations continue as councilors weigh the association's terms and the $250,000 price tag.
