Courtois to Join Lincoln Co

Biddeford Police Commission members pursue a three year contract as Chief Harry Courtois resigns effective Aug. 31 to become personnel manager and plant security director at Lincoln Pulp and Paper in Lincoln Me. Courtois will start Sept 3 and move from a $13 000 city post to a mill position with higher pay and benefits. The commission debated the resignation and contract, with several members supporting continued efforts to retain him.

Dexter Seeks Computer for City of Saco Books

City Administrator John Dexter urged the Saco finance committee to buy a used Burroughs L 5000 magnetic records computer for about $19,500. OOB Survey Criticizes Public Relations In Orchard Beach

A survey of 100 residents and police personnel in Old Orchard Beach finds most residents rate the police as doing a good to excellent job with 58 percent noting improvement. Yet 39 percent fault relations with the community and calls rise for more foot patrols youth programs and direct chief outreach. Thomson Urges Nuclear Energy To End Energy Crisis

New Hampshire Governor Meldrim Thomson urged immediate adoption of nuclear power as the solution to the energy crisis. He called for firing administration officials opposed to nuclear energy and said oil companies should fund 60 new refineries without taxpayer support. Foreign Fishermen Leave Temporarily

Foreign fishing fleets have departed for other waters but will return, says NMFS coordinator Charles Philbrook. Airborne counts show about a dozen West German boats, plus Polish, French, and Romanian vessels near Jeffrey's Ledge and Platt's Bank. Coast Guard flights later reported activity in the 5 Y fishing area from east of Boston to Mount Desert Island. Local fishermen allege net damage and equipment loss from foreign fleets, while federal investigations continue. Senator Muskie met with fishermen and promised federal action, as a new Ledge patrol and enhanced surveillance were announced.
