President Richard H. Hayden promotes Albert E. Cook to assistant vice president and Ronald R. Martel to manager of the Biddeford office. Cook joined in October 1952 serving as manager of the Portland office and later the Portland office.
Peter Truman of Graham Street Biddeford announces his candidacy for the U S House of Representatives in Augusta. A 21 year old University of Maine student and Biddeford High School graduate, he pledges a wage policy, increased school funding, and youth responsibility in city and state government.
Old Orchard Beach elects Griffith as principal of Lakeside Loran Jameson School at 15th Street. He has served as teacher and principal in Westbrook South Berwick and Portland and was an administrative supervisor in Scarborough. Mrs. Bouchard, with 15 years in Town Hall and Chamber of Commerce, joins LaFountain’s office in Town Hall.
Four companies of U S Marines pressed uphill through enemy fire near Da Nang as two weeks of hard combat yielded 72 American and 646 North Vietnamese deaths. A Marine battalion attacked fortified bunkers with tanks backing foot soldiers while 196th Brigade troops linked with Marines. In a separate five hour clash, 75 brigade men suffered 30 percent casualties with five killed and 22 wounded. a Marine helicopter crash blamed on mechanical issues. An Army observation helicopter was shot down 19 miles northwest of Saigon as North Vietnamese forces attacked bivouacing Marines near the demilitarized zone.
North Korea said three wounded U S helicopter crewmen were alive after a crash over North Korea. Maj Gen Lee Choon Sun cited doctors treating Capt David Crawford Spec Herman Hofstatter and WO Malcolm Loepke as seriously to slightly hurt while North Korea demanded a confession and apology from Washington for the incident.

President Benjamin Volk announced in Mayor Lemire’s office that Volk Cene will pay off debt and add a second shift soon. The disclosure came during a meeting with First Development Corp of Biddeford and with Conrad Grondin, president of the development group.
Sen Edward M Kennedy's wife Joan Kennedy miscarried the baby she was expecting in February. She was admitted to a Cape Cod hospital and underwent minor surgery. The senator flew to be at her side after learning of the loss. they have three children.
