Power Outage Plagues York County and Scarborough

Central Maine Power officials cannot determine the cause of a noontime outage that left York County and parts of Scarborough in darkness for about 40 minutes. A line feeding into the London Substation likely failed, with power dropping at 11:45 and returning at 12:25 as the Journal was ready for press. Mayor Alioto's Home Bombed in San Francisco

A pipe bomb exploded at the home of Mayor Joseph L. Alioto during pay dispute negotiations with police on strike. The blast damaged the front porch and windows. no injuries were reported. Bask­ing shark seen near Old Orchard Beach pier

A 12‑foot basking shark was spotted about 100 yards from the Old Orchard Beach pier at noon. Lifeguards emptied the water while officers noted the harmless species. The shark swam toward Bay View as officials, citing Maine’s lack of recorded attacks, waited for it to depart. A spokesman quipped it likely hitchhiked up from Florida.

State To Make Offer Soon On Marie Joseph Property
