Thresher Tank Rupture Discounted As Cause Of Sinking
Naval expert testified that a March 10 over pressure in the Thresher’s reserve feed water tank could not have sunk the submarine. Tests at Portsmouth and Mare Island showed such a failure would not imperil vital piping or cause a reactor explosion. Navy leaders affirmed the program’s soundness as search efforts continue at Woods Hole.

Council Academy Budget Clash Divides Saco Officials
A Saco city council budget showdown left Thornton academy at $315000 and public schools raised by 14000 to honor existing teacher contracts. Mayor Whelan received an unsigned academy contract while trustees complained the academy appropriation fell short of its terms. The special meeting trimmed the contingency fund and bumped credits from unappropriated surplus, yielding a net total of 1043900 dollars for 1963, a tax rise of just under one mill.
