Ranger 4 Moon Probe Crashes Backside of Moon

Ranger 4 with an ailing onboard system tumbled toward the Moon after NASA observers abandoned attempts to revive it. The 730 pound craft was en route to photograph and study the lunar surface and was expected to crash on the Moon’s far side at about 8 55 a.m. It suffered a telemetry and timing failure that prevented solar power tracking and proper sequencing.

Saco Council Passes Record Net Budget in Item by Item Vote

The Saco City council approved a net budget of 1,028,655 at a special meeting, voting item by item. The total, 25,976 below the rejected 1,054,631 and 133,487 above last year’s 895,168, marks a likely record for the city. Mayor Worthing broke several ties, with Aldermen Emens Rowe Rumery opposing and Pendleton Chretien Milne favoring various allocations including Fire, Police, roads, and schools.

Cave Ordeal Ends Happily For Three

Three Eagle Explorer Scouts and a novice spent three days trapped in Lookout Mountain cave near Trenton Georgia before rescue crews found them. James Mason 21 and Bill Bartee 20 of Atlanta along with Martin Huddleston 10 from Ormond Beach Florida were exhausted but safe after a 36 hour search. Mason and Bartee are Emory University and Presbyterian College students respectively.

Cosmos II launches in new Soviet space mission

Tass reported Cosmos II, a new unmanned Soviet satellite, carries scientific instruments and a multichannel radio telemetric system. Cosmos III follows Cosmos I and II launched since March, with a 93.8 minute orbit and 48 degree inclination. Ranger 4 is active in space as both powers push early space exploration milestones.
