Saco City Council approves the 1975 city and school budgets totaling 5.3 million while preserving a tax rate of 38.30 per thousand. The plan cuts 136000 to 75000 for streets and highways and includes a $55,000 municipal and $80,900 school budget reduction, drawing objections over street maintenance and future road needs.
The Maine House moved to seek a Maine Supreme Court ruling on whether a revision to the education funding law is constitutional. The bill would phase in a uniform state property tax for education with a 20 percent cap on year-to-year tax increases, raising issues under the state constitution.
Maine lawmakers from York County fiercely oppose repeal of LD 1994 the school subsidy law. They warn repeal would raise property taxes. discuss shift of welfare costs to communities and funding changes impacting teachers retirement and local budgets. A revised bill LD 1452 is urged to fix inequities.

Attorneys for the town council and citizens filed briefs with Maine Supreme Court Justice Sidney Wernick over a recall election. The dispute rose after the council did not schedule a recall despite sufficient petitions. A 15-member citizen group sued in York County Superior Court seeking a Supreme Court ordered election per the town charter.
