Governor Longley proposes three options to resolve education funding shortfall. He favors reducing state support to 50 percent for local education, with cities and towns covering the rest. alternate plans would cut to 45 or 46 percent. Republicans show mild enthusiasm. Democrats mostly critical. He accepts full responsibility for underfunding and urges solving the problem promptly without blame.
He noted L. D. 1994 the education financing bill is costing much more than anticipated and urged a hard look at snowballing education spending.
The Zoning Board of Appeals unanimously rejected a 36 unit elderly apartment project in lower village, ruling the Coastal Village Residential Zone prohibits apartments. The town cited a map error in the zoning booklet dating to 1968, and the project may be redesignated as a convalescent or nursing home to align with financing and permitted uses.
