Retroactive Pay Denied By Maine Unemployment Ruling
AUGUSTA AP The attorney general's office says back payments cannot be made to people denied unemployment benefits due to an incorrect Employment Securities Commission ruling. From 1961 to last month the ESC denied benefits to those who left work because of illness and could not be rehired on recovery. The commission reversed March 26 after Atty. Gen. Hanock said its interpretation of the law was incorrect. Gov. Reed and Frank A. Besse had hoped for back payments. Besse estimated about 670 people were denied $180,000 to $200,000. Both Hancock told the commission retroactive payments are not allowed.
