West Point Pepperell workers approve three year TWU contract
Local 305 of the Textile Workers Union accepts a three year package from West Point Pepperell Inc. The first year raises 18 cents an hour and benefits rise from 10 to 40 dollars daily with special benefits doubling to 400 dollars. A 1 cent an hour wage adjustment aids 175 workers. Second year up 10 cents an hour plus 4.55 percent overall, vacation pay for workers with 10 plus years, and an extra half holiday with pay before Christmas in 1970. Third year up 12 cents an hour or 5.22 percent overall. Negotiations at Bates plants in Lewiston and Augusta aim to avoid a midnight deadline and no work interruption.

Fire destroys apartment at 361 Main St Biddeford
A Biddeford apartment at 361 Main St burned out of control for about three hours yesterday. Firefighters called for help from Biddeford Pool Arundel and Saco to prevent spread to nearby homes. Owner Paul Moreau and his family were displaced. The blaze started in the fourth floor kitchen of Carroll Ogden who was away. a telephone lineman nearby smelled burning wires. Six fire trucks fought the flames and Saco lent a ladder truck. Thick smoke forced crews to retreat briefly. fire investigators continued at the scene.

Head Start funds awarded to county for summer program
