Canzano to Speak to Unionists

Prince Akihito Marries Commoner Michiko in Tokyo

Crown Prince Akihito wed Michiko Shoda a wealthy miller’s daughter in a ceremony steeped in Japan’s tradition and democracy. Plans For New School Under Way

The Biddeford Board of Motion backed building a high school this year. Connecticut Man Held At Kennebunk

John Reynolds of Hartford pleaded guilty in Kennebunk Municipal Court to carrying concealed weapons and received 30 days in jail. Detective Captain Edward M. Kochian said Reynolds would be detained at York County Jail. Reynolds admitted stealing two cars in Portland and was arrested after entering a Wells turnpike stallhouse seeking gasoline, with two loaded .38 revolvers found.

Biddeford High Band Heads to Mexico for Exchange Concert

Sixty five Biddeford High School band members travel by chartered bus to Mexico for a weekend exchange with Mexico High. They perform solo and join the Mexico band for a joint concert Saturday plus social events and Sunday church attendance. May return visit planned. Biddeford plans a Civil Defense alert for April 17 with schoolchildren sent home at 11 30 am and all traffic halted between 1 15 and 1 25 pm. Directed by Alden Jacobs under Police Chief Edgar Sevigny, the program includes shelter, radio operation, and a mass feeding demonstration at Biddeford Fire Station led by Mrs. Rene Roy the night before.

Seven Young Jet Pilots Selected For Space Flight

Seven jet pilots in their 30s were named Mercury astronauts at a NASA news conference. The group includes three Air Force captains Leroy Cooper Jr Virgil Grissom and Gordon Slayton three Navy officers Malcolm Carpenter Walter Schirra and Alan Shepard and one Marine Lt Col John Glenn Jr. The team aims to orbit Earth at 100 to 150 miles height and 18000 mph, potentially paving the way for lunar and planetary missions.
