Weakened Dikes Relieve Pressure in Midwest Floodbelt

Hundreds of volunteers battled weakened levees along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers in Illinois and Missouri. They filled sandbags and used hay and snow fences to reinforce embankments while night patrols watched for breaks. Civil Rights Bill Nears Passage After Vote

PORTLAND The Maine Aeronautics Commission wants more data before endorsing New England Airlines plan to serve northern New England towns. Chairman Milton V. Smith said the commission will discuss with backers and obtain financial details. The venture seeks routes to Sanford Biddeford Augusta Portland Bangor Old Town Millinocket Houston and Caribou with Portland and Bangor linking to Burlington for Montreal and western New York.

Airport At Biddeford Gets Grant

AUGUSTA AP Gov Reed and the Executive Council approved issuing more than seven million dollars in Maine bonds. Three point three million funds University of Maine student and faculty housing. Three point nine five million finances general state building projects. Bids expected around May 18. Armory expansions approved for South Portland and Bath. A fifty two thousand five hundred dollar grant to the Maine Aeronautics Commission supports two airport projects. State share for Biddeford and Fryeburg work totals seventy seven thousand five hundred with twenty five thousand available.

Gamble Heiress Marries Romanian Suitor After Hurdles

Hendersonville North Carolina reports Heiress Gamble Benedict, 19, wed Romanian-born André Porumbeanu, 35, in a five minute civil ceremony at a mountain lodge after legal obstacles and family issues.
