Mrs Ruth Brown a Swiss native and mother of Jo Ann Brown lectured to fourth graders at Bonython School Saco on Wednesday introducing the topic of levee construction and flood defense in the Midwest belt with a local classroom audience.
Hundreds of volunteers battled weakened levees along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers in Illinois and Missouri. They filled sandbags and used hay and snow fences to reinforce embankments while night patrols watched for breaks. Residents evacuated Canton and nearby towns as officials warned of seepage and possible dike failure.
Miss Lucia M. Cormier, the Democratic candidate for U S Senate, warned a Democratic women’s group that a GOP revival and high turnout could make Maine’s election close. The 66 year old Bonython school in Saco, built in 1894, lacks modern facilities. It has six classrooms with two basement rooms heated by wall radiators, no assembly space, cafeteria or music room, and trains nearby disturb study. Budget cuts limit renovations, though enrollment is rising, prompting a need for two to three extra classrooms next year.
PORTLAND The Maine Aeronautics Commission wants more data before endorsing New England Airlines plan to serve northern New England towns. Chairman Milton V. Smith said the commission will discuss with backers and obtain financial details. The venture seeks routes to Sanford Biddeford Augusta Portland Bangor Old Town Millinocket Houston and Caribou with Portland and Bangor linking to Burlington for Montreal and western New York.
AUGUSTA AP Gov Reed and the Executive Council approved issuing more than seven million dollars in Maine bonds. Three point three million funds University of Maine student and faculty housing. Three point nine five million finances general state building projects. Bids expected around May 18. Armory expansions approved for South Portland and Bath. A fifty two thousand five hundred dollar grant to the Maine Aeronautics Commission supports two airport projects. State share for Biddeford and Fryeburg work totals seventy seven thousand five hundred with twenty five thousand available.
Hendersonville North Carolina reports Heiress Gamble Benedict, 19, wed Romanian-born André Porumbeanu, 35, in a five minute civil ceremony at a mountain lodge after legal obstacles and family issues. The couple traveled to the resort town and underwent standard examinations. Questions arose at Register of Deeds Marshall Matterson about the validity of the license in light of Porumbeanu's Mexican divorce dated March 15.
