Michigan Forensic association practice session in Iron Mountain saw A D Johnston high school win three of six debates. Fourteen schools attended. In the main rounds Bessemer teams faced Manistique Kingsford Sault Ste Marie and Feldh with mixed results. Reserve rounds featured Escanaba and Manistique matchups. The debate topic was direct popular vote for U S president.

Girl Scouts Organize At Washington School
Two Girl Scout troops at Washington school resumed activities this week under the leadership of Mrs. W. F. Pellow and Mrs. G. Bucholz with Mrs. Nickle assisting. Nelda Leeke was elected president and Patsy Johnson vice president. Patrols formed, with Lois Cocking and Judy Walls among leaders, as seventh and eighth grade girls organized under the Bessemer Women’s club sponsorship. A second group of Brownies becomes a Scout troop under Annie Stevens and aides, with eight girls registered to date.

Dizzy Trout and teammates staged a big league style demonstration against the Range All Stars despite a previous windstorm and rainfall. The event’s organizers secured an Hartford Fire Insurance Company policy to cover the revenue shortfall, and they received a draft for 718.25 as the attendance and income fell short of expectations.

Mrs John Thors Sr celebrated her 88th birthday at a party hosted by daughters Mrs August Ny lund and Mrs Thomas Rule and daughter in law Mrs Arvid Thors. About 25 guests attended including Rev F E W Eastman who spoke on the occasion. Granddaughter Mrs Walter Cywinski presided at the coffee urn. Thors came here in 1886 and was married 61 years to John Thors who died in 1939.

Speed Boys Break Even In Two Games This Past Week
The Bessemer Speed Boys defeated the Negaunee Miners 45 to 35 at A. D. Johnston gym led by Paul Kuusisto with 17 points and strong rebounding. Freshmen and sophomores showed promise as coach Bruckbauer mixed lineups, and Rivers led Negaunee with 13 points before three players fouled out. The team opens MW slate against Wakefield Tuesday night.

Frank Weber 38 of Verona died at 1 Wednesday morning at Wakefield hospital after a cerebal hemorrhage. He was born March 30, 1911 in Bessemer and worked at the Eureka mine Ramsay Groves Construction Co and Anvil mine. Surviving Shirley Ann 12 daughter John brother Mrs Frank Cech and Mrs Anton Trigo two sisters Louis Duray another sister died 1948.

Early Pioneer W W Gray Dies in Gary Indiana at 95
Mrs. Catherine Louise Gray age 95 longtime Bessemer resident died Monday at the home of her son in Gary Indiana where she had lived for eight years. She helped found the local Presbyterian church and joined the Dorcas Chapter of the Eastern Star. Surviving are her son Ward Gray three daughters and numerous grandchildren great grandchildren a sister and a brother. Funeral services were held at the J J Frick Funeral Home with Rev. R I Larsen officiating.
