Sharon Lutheran Church Golden Jubilee Observed

The Sharon Lutheran Church in Bessemer marked its 50th anniversary with a weekend of services. A golden jubilee supper followed by a program of hymns, anthems, solo and organ pieces featured Rev. C. O. Bostrom, Rev. F. E. W. Eastman, Rev. R. E. Byquist and others. A reunion of confirmation classes and a roll call of members highlighted the event, noting past pastors and the 1889 origin. The congregation, led by Rev. Eastman, built a new church at Sellar and Moore streets during his tenure.

Finnish Church Festival Highlights Community Program

A Thanksgiving festival was held Sunday evening at St. Paul Finnish Lutheran Church followed by lunch in the parlors. Mrs. John Ross announced the program with Mrs. David Sutherland at the piano. The event featured hymns, prayers, songs by Sunday school, scripture readings, numerous recitations, solo performances, a piano trio, and a North Bessemer group selection, concluding with a final hymn. Also noted is a Michigan tularemia update reporting four authenticated cases in 1939 and eleven in 1938 despite a two million annual cottontail and snowshoe hare bill.

Oliver Men To Bowl Saturday In Duluth Event

Oliver Iron Mining Co. employees will hold a bowling tournament in Duluth on Saturday November 25 with teams from Ishpeming Ironwood Michigan Eveleth Virginia Hibbing Minn and the Wolvin bulldine. One hundred sixty bowlers will participate divided between the Bowling Center of the Duluth Athletic Club and the Arrowhead Alleys. Play starts 1 30 p m ends 5 30 p m Luncheon at Legion headquarters and dinner at the Northland Country Club. Dinner at 7 p m followed by entertainment with about 220 attendees including 60 guests.

Gogebic County to Represent Michigan at 4-H Congress

Forty eight boys and girls will form Michigan’s official group for the 18th annual national 4-H club congress in Chicago December 1 to 8, alongside the International Livestock Exposition. From Gogebic county, Charles Van Lokkeran of Ironwood, a potato show winner, is included.

Gogebic County Gets SX Prefix For License Plates

Michigan 1940 license plates introduce two letter county prefixes with four digits. Gogebic uses SX, replacing the old GB mark, as statewide system lists many county codes from AA to TZ. Plates are silver with black inscriptions and show county identity by letters in most counties.

Deer hunting in Michigan shifts with cars and camps

Automobiles and better roads have transformed Michigan deer hunting. Hunters drive to deer country in hours, tow trailers or stay in hotels, increasing license sales to over 162,000 in 1938. Higher hunter density alters tracking, with many using deer runways and waiting sites, while law enforcement expands to cover northern and southern counties during the season.

Sawmills Restart in Ontonagon County Operations Begin

Trout Creek saw mill formerly idle is now in operation by Von Platen Fox company of Iron Mountain with lumber cut from Ontonagon county timber limits and over 40 men employed. The Weidman mill on old highway M-28 near Topaz is being commissioned with a sizable crew expected to work through the winter.

Free Christmas trees do not grow in Michigan warning

Bar roadside cutting warning issued by Ray D. Van Wagoner ahead of holiday season. It states that removing Christmas trees without the landowner consent is theft with penalties up to 500 dollars and three months in jail. Inspections of sales bills and owner consent may be conducted by conservation officers or state officers.

Christmas Seal Sale Opens Soon in Michigan

Governor Loren D. Dickinson proclaims the Christmas Seal sale will open December 1 urging Michigan residents to buy seals to fund tuberculosis eradication. He notes 30 years of war against the disease via the Michigan Tuberculosis Association founded in 1907 and stresses continuing efforts as deaths and costs remain high.

New Heads for School Groups in Gogebic County

John Maher of Watersmeet was elected president of the Gogebic County School Board Association, succeeding Dr. C. E. Stevens. Mrs. Jane Q. Massie of Bessemer became vice president and Supt. E. J. Oas of Bessemer was re-elected secretary treasurer. The meeting at Watersmeet High School featured W. E. Thomas of the Michigan Education Association on state aid and legislation. The Gogebic Range Schoolmasters Club elected George Sullivan of Hurley as president, with Walter Faltinowski of Watersmeet as vice president and Ernest Dear of Ironwood as secretary treasurer.

Change In Hurley Bessemer Agents

A change in Chicago and Northwestern Railway agents occurs at Bessemer and Hurley. Louis Winch, longtime agent at Mercer and Bessemer, is now at Hurley replacing the late M W Schumacher. Joseph Niemuth becomes agent at Bessemer, formerly Ram s ay agent.

Strait traffic records set by state ferry service

On November 12 and 13, 1938, the department carried 2,843 vehicles, surpassing the previous high of 2,733. Commissioner Van Wagoner noted no delay for hunters obtaining service across the Straits. The fleet included three large boats in operation most of the period, with two additional boats standing by to meet demand.

Mining Notes From Iron River Copper Decline and Reclamation

The Forbes mine area is idle with ground sinking toward a cave and a listing headframe. Calumet & Hecla halted deep mining after sept 30 at No 12 shaft and now shifts to Ahmeek and Seneca mines while exploring other lodes. Tailings reclamation at Torch Lake uses electric dredges to recover copper, sustaining supply for years.
