Funeral Services Held Tuesday For Joseph Zanon
Joseph Zanon aged 61, longtime city resident, died Saturday at Grand View hospital after a recent illness. Born in Cles Tyrol Austria January 9 1891 he came to America in 1907 settling in Bessemer and worked 45 years for Oliver Iron Mining Co now at Geneva mine. He married Clara Remondini February 24 1919 and was a member of St Sebastian parish and Gogebic Orders of Eagles. Survived by widow two daughters Leonard Zanon one son four grandchildren two sisters and many relatives. Funeral mass was at St Sebastian church Tuesday at 9 am with Rev Robert Monroe officiating. burial Hillcrest cemetery. Out of town relatives attended from Milwaukee Spooner Garberville Alliance Iron Mountain.

Christmas Seals mailed to Gogebic area residents as the Gogebic County Tuberculosis Association again participates with national drives. Seal Sale Chairman Arnold Korpi urges support for projects including vocational rehabilitation, X ray service, patient services, health education, and medical research. Drive runs Nov 17 to Dec 25 with Seals used on letters and gifts.

Plymouth Mine Ends Operations after 37 Years of Work
E C Sponberg, superintendent, announced the closure of the Plymouth open pit mine on Gogebic Range after 37 years. Last ore was moved November 6 and dismantling of equipment is underway. Loomis pit in the area has had small scale stripping and infrastructure developments continue nearby. The Plymouth operation began in 1915, with 42.168 million tons shipped over the period and a peak year in 1923 with 827,400 tons. The pit depth now exceeds 400 feet.

Former Resident Oscar Peterson Dies in California
Oscar Peterson, formerly of this city, died last week in Compton California at 61. He left Bessemer for California in 1920 and owned Central Lumber Company in Compton. Born October 25 1891 in Sweden, he had extensive business interests including lumber plants in Los Angeles and Willowbrook, and subdivided a Redlands orange grove into 125 homes. He chaired the First Methodist Church board, helped organize the Kiwanis club, and is survived by wife Esther three sons Roy George and Donald four brothers and a sister and four grandchildren. Burial is at Inglewood Cemetery with Dr John N Ashley officiating.

Deer Season Notes From Gogebic County Area
Lack of snow slowed deer hunters through Wednesday with no serious local hunting mishaps reported. Reports include John and Leon Laine of Bay City harvesting a 1160 lb buck near Paulding, Jim Jezek taking a 175 lb buck near Lake Gogebic, and other hunters from Ironwood Hurley and Anvil totaling multiple deer. The largest buck cited was 250 pounds near Camp 9 north of Bessemer.

Mineral Exploration Bill Proposed for Michigan Legislature
A bill to encourage exploration and development of Michigan mineral resources will be introduced next session. The Gogebic County board proposed it, with discussion already held in Crystal Falls. The measure would require owners of mineral rights to reaffirm ownership and file with a $5 fee by December 31, 1954, or face loss of rights. The act defines mineral rights and excludes oil, gas, and brine from the scope.

Military Funeral Rites For John A Johns or Lefty Johnson
John A Johnson 55 of Bessemer died last Saturday at home after a long illness. A World War I veteran, he served in the U S Army and was later employed at McKinney Steel and Republic Steel mine operations. He is survived by a foster son Kenneth Dawson, a sister, three brothers, his wife Dorothy Dawson, and other relatives. Religious and military rites were held with Gedda-Cychosz American Legion post leading the services and a West Point cadet among the color guard.
