Van Wagoner Attacks Board Tax Ruling on Highway Funds
Michigan State Highway Commissioner Murray D. Van Wagoner condemned a state board ruling requiring contractors to pay a three percent sales tax on all materials used in highway projects. He argued the tax diverts highway revenues to the general fund and noted that if the department did work itself the tax would not apply. He called it robbing Peter to pay Paul and said the rule misuses highway allotments.
