Saloon Crackdown Follows Supreme Court Ruling
In South Range near Houghton seven saloonkeepers were ordered to close or face prosecution after the Whealkate Mining Company won a Supreme Court appeal over saloon licensing. The firm, which owns most of South Range and imposed liquor reserves on sales, pushed the action following last year’s venue shift and judge’s ruling for the defendant. The high court reversed, and drastic measures now proceed against the saloons.
