Vincent Jubeck Dies Monday at 94 in Bessemere
Vincent Jubeck 94 died at his Bessemere home Monday after a cerebral hemorrhage. Born in Poland March 27, 1856, he came to the United States in 1880, lived in several states, and settled in Bessemere 53 years ago. He worked at the Ironton and Castle mines until 1910, then carpentry and plumbing. He was widowed, survived by two daughters Mrs William Lester and Mrs Joseph Meyer Sr., a son Thomas, 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Pope Pius XII Urges Merchants to Honor Moral Duty

Two Local Boys Chosen for Naval ROTC Candidates
Bessemer residents Donald David Heikkinen of Ramsay and Joel Walter Schmidt of 404 East Sellar Street were named among 1,800 civilian candidates for the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps. The selection followed a nationwide pool of about 25,000 seniors and graduates, with 7,400 certified and state quotas based on male high school graduates in 1948. Additional 200 candidates were picked from the Fleet for the NROTC program.

Former Bessemerite Dies Saturday
Isaac E. Syrjala aged 55 of Wakefield died last Saturday at Grand View hospital after a long illness. Born February 12 1895 in Durakka Vaasan Laani Finland he married Hilda Syrjala in 1918 and immigrated to the United States in 1921. He lived in Ramsay and worked at Eure ka mine until six years ago. Survived by his wife four sons Maurice Eugene Elmer and Capt Allan in the U S Air Force on leave, three grandchildren and his mother and sister in Finland. Funeral at First Lutheran Wakefield burial at Lakeside Cemetery.

Police Chief Warns of Summer Blasting Cap Dangers
Police Chief Michael A. Gedda joins the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the Institute of Makers of Explosives in warning that blasting cap accidents among children rise during summer. The campaign urges kids and adults to avoid handling caps and report finds to police or sheriff offices. Blasting caps, tiny copper or aluminum cylinders with or without fuses, are used to detonate dynamite in mining, construction, and stump clearing. They can be lost or left in barns or near roads, posing severe risk to children who pick them up.
