Mrs Joseph Gastino 63 of 103 E Sellar St Bessemer died March 16 at Mercy Hospital Miami after paralytic strokes. Born in Italy she came to the United States, lived in Chicago then Bessemer, ran the Bessemer Food Shop and later Gastino Root Beer Stand. Survived by husband a daughter Mrs Pierre Berry and grandson Joseph Berry of Miami. Funeral in Miami with interment there. Family at 1502 SW 21th Ave Miami Florida.

Gogebic county circuit court granted a sanity petition for John E. Backlund 35 of Ramsay charged with first degree murder in his mother’s death. He is held without bond at Gogebic county jail after authorities found Mrs. Eric Backlund 73 dead in a well at the family home. The hearing set for 9 30 a m involves doctors D L Davidson and Florian Santini to assess mental state. Backlund was arrested March 12 after a tip from his sister and his admission to throwing his mother into the well.

Herman Erickson Dies After Heart Attack in Ramsay
Ramsay resident Herman Erickson died at Divine Infant Hospital Wakefield on Monday March 16 after suffering a heart attack while shoveling snow. Born April 15 1886 in Woro Finland he married Hilda Erickson in Ironwood in 1913 and lived in Ramsay with his wife and son F Lirfieid Erickson of Aurora surviving. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p m at Sharon Lutheran Church with Rev Mark Wickstrom officiating.

A veterans memorial games party in Bessemer raised 65.40 with trade certificates as the top prize won by Mrs Harold Nicklaus. PTA members and local clubs organized the event, donations included 150 in groceries and 10 pounds sugar, as plans begin for a March 23 fundraising games night with groceries and a stuffed Easter rabbit prize.
