Tax Commission reviews Bessemer mining valuations
The State Tax Commission opened a session on the 21st to review Bessemer mining property valuations after complaints of underassessment. Despite hearings and a mine visit, no changes were made to the local assessments. The report notes hostile coverage by a writer from the Tree Press and describes regional mining activity by Oliver, Cleveland Cliffs, and exploration near Swanzey and Ishpeming with drills at multiple sites including Lake Bancroft shores and Carp River areas.

Corner stone laid for new Presbyterian church service
The cornerstone of the new Presbyterian church was laid last Sunday with ceremonies. Rev. JL Smith of Waukesha presided, and Rev. John Erickson read the church history. Copies of local papers and the Chicago Times-Herald history were sealed in the stone, to be read long after the writers and papers have passed. Several hundred attended, with many from nearby towns along the range. Exploration in Lake Superior districts remains active, shifting toward Menominee, Marquette, Gogebic ranges, with Vermillion quiet. Palmer near Marquette shows good ore potential as drilling continues in Cascade district and Cleveland-Cliffs Iron advances on Pittsburg & Lake Superior lands.

Tramps Seem to Flood Marquette Says Police
The Mining Journal notes a surge of vagrants in Marquette with at least fifty tramps appearing in a week and officers crowded near the rail yards. Several professional cripples are in town this week, including a man with a supposed left arm wound used to beg for money, which is actually self inflicted. The piece suggests establishing a county work house to detain and organize idle men into chain gangs to deter them from moving to range cities.
