Double Tracking Planned for South Shore Route
Reports from Duluth indicate the S860 plans include double tracking the South Shore line from Superior to Sault Ste. Marie. The work will take years and the Soo line may take over the South Shore with Marquette headquarters moved to Duluth. The Canadian Pacific system would route coast to coast business via the head of the lakes, increasing through service and tonnage through that corridor.

Seed of the steel trust’s rise and the Bessemer spark
A historical sketch traces Andrew Kloman’s 1858 iron plant at Millvale, its growth into a major steel firm, and how Andrew Carnegie and others shaped the venture into Carnegie Phipps & Co. It then explains the iron to steel transition spurred by the Bessemer process, the roles of Henry Bessemer, William Kelly, and Robert Mushet, and the unequal rewards among the inventors.
