The Upper Peninsula Legion plans a large July convention in Bessemer despite lack of state aid. Gogebic County shows strong enrollment and funds, with 2940 Legionnaires statewide in 1932 and leadership from Marquette, Houghton, Ironwood, and Escanaba. U P delegates emphasize club support, music, and drill teams for a bustling gathering.
Lloyd Sincock, 23, son of Mr and Mrs W J Sincock, died Friday morning in Minneapolis after three weeks illness. Born in Bessemer 23 years ago, he moved with his family to Minneapolis in 1926. He leaves five brothers and grandparents Mr and Mrs Levi Rice. Mrs Rice and aunt Mrs Stephen Quayle will attend the funeral in Minneapolis.
Four Michigan 4-H members with over six years in club work and outstanding records are awarded trips to the National Encampment in Washington, DC, June 15 to 21. Irwin R. Shave of Bessemer, Maurine Sutton of Holly, Milton Bergeson of Sterling, and Hartier E. Reynolds of Rives Junction will join peers from 47 states and territories in learning leadership skills and visiting the capital.
New York born James Mattern, flying solo from New York, reached Oslo then Moscow before engine trouble and a gas leak forced a late landing near Prokopievsk, Siberia. Others in the era, Wiley Post and Harold Gatty, had set a 15 hour 51 minute record in 1931.
Four blocks in a rich petroleum area were leveled by a Friday explosion and fire that killed 16 people and injured 3, with damages totalling several hundred thousand dollars. Signal Hill, near Long Beach, was described as the richest little city in the world. In other notes, Uline voted to repeal the 18th amendment at Monday’s election, while Indiana, long a dry stronghold, held its election Tuesday and favored repeal as the 7th state to do so.
Cyrus H. Curtis, eminent publisher and benefactor, died Wednesday at age 83. He led Curtis Publishing Co, publishers of the Saturday Evening Post, Ladies Home Journal and The Country Gentleman, and Curtis-Martin Newspapers Inc, publishers of the Philadelphia Public Ledger and the New York Evening Post.
The Upper Peninsula Legion convention will be in Bessemer from Friday July 21 to Sunday July 23 1933. AWP school led by Guy M Cox and talks by Robert J Byers Horace C Parrish expected to draw interest due to new disability income legislation. Events include trap shooting boxing show night parade grand parade banquet and grand ball with various meetings for Legion Auxiliary Civil War Spanish American War veterans and UP association delegates.

The Michigan liquor control commission announced the appointment of 86 inspectors, including Edward Cameron Marvin Desonia and Sam Jacobs in the 12th congressional district. Inspectors will be assigned to warehouses to ensure revenue stamps are properly affixed to beer cases and barrels, with salaries set by the commission.
Murray VanWagoner becomes state highway commissioner on July 1 guiding a shift in staff. Employees receive day to day warnings as vacancies will be created by those who supported him. County Democrats forward formal job applications to Lansing as part of the transition while Dillman is considered for national public works supervision, a move that could be approved next month.
Range notes report street lights out in Marenisco due to unpaid taxes risking water system operations. The First National Bank of Wakefield plans to reopen unrestricted on Monday June 12 with Anton Ringsmuth as president and a six-member board. The Townsite mine near Ironwood will resume full-time ore loading around July 1 employing 75 workers. In local fatalities, Charles Maitalla 45 died at the Lee camp near Wakefield, John Tynni 60 died on a Wakefield township road from sunstroke, and Andrew Latthre 57 was found dead in a swamp east of Wakefield.
Mayor Gedda appointed Charles Montesi caretaker of the city dumping ground north of town. The annual salary is 50 dollars, and the appointment received city council approval at Monday's meeting.
The Scott Creamery company of Gladstone is erecting a model creamery in Gladstone. The concrete block structure measures 50 by 28 feet and will house new machinery. Hugh Cavill, owner and manager, will install the equipment. Ole Peterson and William Gamache hold the building contract.

Registration closes Saturday with boards at Washington High Barber and first precinct locations. In city race Frank C Davis seeks reelection against Bruno Crenna and Charles H Lutz for one year term. Six candidates vie for two full terms including Janet Massie John Marchello Raymond Skwor Lucille Rupp Smith Andy Byrne and Charles Swanson. Township contest limited to school board president Dr Charles E Anderson facing Alfred Westeen Ramsay. treasurer A Jake Fink unopposed. Township polls 10 a m to 5 p m with tax voting and district business at Ramsay town hall. unregistered voters may still register Saturday from 3 p m to 5 p m at Ramsay and Puritan schools.
George Katich died Wednesday afternoon at 2 at Grand View hospital after a three year tuberculosis illness. He was 34, born in Austria, and worked 29 years in local mines. One daughter, Miss Eva Eveict, survives. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at Prick Undertaking Parlors with Rev. C J Swobods officiating. Interment in Hillrest cemetery.
Gogebic county mail commission orders signs at intersections under highway engineer Geo W Koronski. Travelers on main highways will be directed to the Black River road north from Bessemer to a county park on Lake Superior. Mount Zion at Imnwood is highlighted as an outing spot.
The medical and surgical staffs of Grand View Hospital cancel their meeting set for Tuesday evening June 13 due to numerous medical meetings in June. A July meeting plans a Mayo Clinic guest speaker.
Marquette Thomas Pascoe a bank cashier formerly Negau, convicted of misapplying funds, collapsed and died in his lawyer's office yesterday while awaiting sentencing in court.
