Voters to decide school elections in Bes semer and Bessemer towns
The Bes semer and Bessemer township annual school election is set for Monday June 8 with two trustee seats in each area up for grabs. In Bes semer township A. Jake Fink and Edwin C Carlson seek re election alongside Peter F Carpenedo and Arthur E Wahlberg. Voting hours run 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. In Bessemer township voting starts 10:00 a.m. and ends 6:00 p.m. Voters receive two ballots including a millage tax proposal for five years at one and a half percent of assessed value for school purposes. The proposal has broad local backing from civic groups and PTA units.

Edward Laine Puritan Dies After Long Illness
Edward Laine 57, a pensioner of Oliver Iron Mining Co., died Tuesday evening at his Puritan home after a three year illness. Born August 1, 1884 in Jameelani Finland, he came to the United States in 1908 and lived 34 years in Bessemer township. He married Hilda Siren in 1995 in Finland and is survived by two sons Reino Puritan and John, a daughter Mrs Wesley Rav ey of Ironwood, another daughter Lillian at home, a sister Mrs Mathilda Salmi here and another sister in Finland, plus one granddaughter Jean Laine of Puritan. Funeral services are at 1:30 pm at C W Moore funeral home and 2 pm at St Paul Finnish Lutheran church, with Rev Herman Matero of Ironwood officiating. Interment in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Council approves bond contract with Shaw McDermott and Sparks
Monday night the council approved a $90,000 second mortgage lighting system bond issue with Shaw McDermott and Sparks of Des Moines. The War Production Board could not grant a priority rating for a third unit, noting adequate generating capacity and no defense load. City employees received small raises from $72 to $125 per hour for various positions, including Czajkowski, Re, Novascone, Olson, Gedda, Gotta, Godlewski, and others.

Injunction Halts State Tax Review Hearing
An injunction was served on the state tax commission Monday preventing a hearing to review the 1942 assessment roll. The commission meeting is adjourned until after a court hearing set for June 6 at 10 a.m. The city argues the 1942 roll is prepared and collection not started, though some taxpayers have paid the first half.

Basketball Team Receives KC Trophy at Banquet
The Knights of Columbus lodge awarded the Wisconsin Michigan high school conference champions trophy to the high school basketball team at the senior banquet held Wednesday evening. Ironwood Attorney Injured In Wisconsin Highway Crash
Harry K. Bay a well known Iron wood attorney was critically injured Friday night when his car struck a barricade near Marengo Wisconsin and plunged over an embankment after a washed out bridge. He suffered a fractured jaw collarbone chest and shoulder injuries and scalp lacerations. Bay had taken a wrong turn at an intersection before the crash.
