Michigan Bell plans postwar rural service expansion
Lansing May 30 The Michigan Bell Telephone Company announced plans for a 7 500 000 rural program to improve farmer service and extend its scope. The effort will create jobs for 3 000 employees in the armed forces and others, expanding a rural program begun earlier. The plan notes two thirds of rural Michigan Bell territory homes lie along pole lines and about half have service, with 75 percent along lines or near enough to serve without extra charges. It describes new construction methods including long span steel wire, rubber covered wire buried by a plow, and potential small dial switches near farm groups to improve direct farmer communication. Research with Rural Electrification Administration and private power companies on power line carrier and microwave radiotelephone systems could extend service, while radiotelephone bridges already connect storm gaps.
