Odawah Indians promised to play July 4 and 5 but did not show, leading Ramsay to be secured to face the home team in a 12 to 4 defeat. Local clubs and lineups are listed, with notes on outs, hits, and defensive miscues as spectators prepared for a Mellen visit to even the series.
John Martin, 18, pled guilty to grand larceny in Aedland Municipal Court and was bound over to the circuit court. Earlier he robbed Marie Hanko of 65 dollars at a Mellen boarding house and stole 101.75 dollars from Charles Pearson, fleeing successfully until Pearson, armed, shot him in the heel near Mellen as he fled into the timber.
Ex governor Chase S Osborn spoke from the Puritan hotel steps to about 500 people in Bessemer on Thursday noon. He defended equal mining valuations and urged voters to consider state issues, noting Osborn’s role in mine valuation reform and praising his public service. The visit included a Miller band serenade and travel notes on Osborn’s schedule, with future stops listed and the board adjournment musing on county affairs.

A grand opening dance will be held tonight in the new Harrington and Tol land store building. The Newport Mine Band and orchestra will provide the music. Tickets are per couple with supper included. Everyone is welcome.
The board of supervisors met in adjourned session to approve standard bills for poor relief and indignant soldier dependents, and miscellaneous accounts. Provisions claims for Wakefield quarantine parties were tabled for better information. A claim regarding seeking criminal in Minnesota under a Wakefield warrant was referred to the prosecuting attorney. Proposals to create a county public park on the Gogebie bank and to establish proper coroners inquest records were referred to Finance and County Rows and Bridges and Judiciary respectively. A meeting of representative progressives in the county decided to place a full county ticket in the field. Chairman Iver HL Hagen of Bessemer called the meeting, with Ben Jussen of Ironwood as Chairman and John ThorsJdr of Bessemer as Secretary. The group discussed materials for county officers, proposed several candidates, and adopted a resolution repudiating the get together proposals. Petitions were prepared for the suggested candidates.
Mr Forman announces a summer school to be opened at Montey offering both elementary and high school coursework during vacation. The program aims to provide students with an opportunity to complete schoolwork and continue learning in a structured setting.
Corrigan McKinney and Co. announced plans to open bids this week for two 500 ton furnaces on the upper river at Cleveland. The company, a major iron mine operator in the upper peninsula, expects both furnaces to begin blast when the steel plant starts operation. With four furnaces, the firm will require 1,000,000 tons of ore annually.
Gene Jaimes Martin died in Keewatin Minnesota on Tuesday at age 42. His remains were brought home for a funeral at the M E church Friday at 2 pm officiated by Rev W B Smith. He left town recently seeking health from tuberculosis. He is survived by his mother in Keewatin three brothers and three sisters including Mrs Chas Harkins of the Mesaba range Mrs Allen Benjiman of Dayton Ohio Wm Martin of Chicago and Richard and Mrs Sam Deney of this city. Out of town mourners included Mr and Mrs Kas Harkins and the mother. He was a member of the city fire department and his fellow firefighters accompanied the body to its final rest.
Miss Della Whitburn won the missing word contest last week with the word are used in the Gogebic House advertisement. The Herald ads are widely read as many contestants have participated and the contest has been very successful.

The Michigan state water fish and forestry department requires non resident anglers to obtain licenses before fishing inland waters. All nonresident males over eighteen must secure a license. A $3 license covers all fish including trout, with a special license to exclude trout. Non residents owning cottages must also obtain licenses. Penalties include a fine up to $50 or up to thirty days in county jail.
Word from El Paso announces the death of Rev. W C McCracken aged 65, longtime rector of the Church of the Transfiguration in Ironwood. He served 30 years in the ministry and was recognized for heroism during the 1878 yellow fever outbreak in Granana, Mis. The city later presented him a home in Mississippi upon retirement from active duty.
Attorney Charles Jumphry filed papers Friday afternoon vis a vis damages for Pollock against Andy Byrne for $10,000. The suit stems from the election case Byrne brought against Pollock after last spring’s vote.
