Crowds filled Bessemer for a complete Fourth of July program with a morning salute delayed by a brief shower. A morning boys and girls race preceded a 9:30 parade featuring 26 entrants and numerous decorated floats. Bound Over To Circuit Court In Hit And Run Case
Arne Benson of Bessemer, 23, was bound over to circuit court after confessing to driving a car that struck Miss Ina Antilla and Miss Margery Robbins near Grand View hospital on December 2, 1938, then leaving the scene. He failed to post $1,000 bond and was jailed. The hit and run involved two Grand View hospital nurses. Benson, arrested by state police and a county deputy, said he was driving west on US-2 at high speed and believed he struck the two women. His companion was Arthur Laine of the city.
