Heroism Marks Toward Rescue of Boy
Unparalleled rescue efforts at a Ramsay pit aimed to save Clarence Hope 23 of Ashland and nearby boy John Forss from a dangerous test pit. Hope died after a 125 foot fall and drowning as workers built a frame and lowered a bucket despite dense smoke and water. The boy survived the dive and the rescue was led by Newton Made. Funeral for Clarence Hope, born January 29, 1902, was held in Ashland after his 21st birthday. Louise Meyer of Ashland is mourned along with two sisters Mrs. Florence Maslowski and Mrs. Charles Maslowski.
