Bessemer Band to Stage Mid Winter Concert Next Tuesday
The Bessemer City Schools instrumental program led by Richard Freeley will present its annual mid winter concert on Tuesday February 3 at 7 p.m. in Washington School gymnasium. About 65 musicians from A D Johnston High School and Washington School bands will perform swing novelties folk tunes overtures and a modern symphonic band suite. The concert is open to students and the community with a second showing for Washington and Barber school students at 10 a.m. the next day.

Charles Anderson Dies WWII Veteran in La Mesa
Charles Anderson 79 a World War II veteran died January 12 in La Mesa California where he had lived for 15 years. Born September 10 1879 in Norway he moved to Bessemer with parents and later worked for Oliver Iron Mining Co and as a shovel demonstrator. He married Anna Ramstad of Bessemer September 29 1900 and leaves two sons Carl and Conrad and daughters Mrs William Herchey and Mrs William Cooney eight grandchildren and a brother Harold of Bessemer. Funeral services were held January 15 in La Mesa and remains cremated.

George St John Found Dead Near His Home Saturday
George St John aged 54 died Saturday about 6 30 p m of a self inflicted gunshot in his head with a 22 caliber rifle. He was found at the rear entrance of his home on Black River Road North Bessemer. Despondent over ill health, he was born in Bessemer November 15 1904 and operated the family farm since his father’s death. He wed Anna Kutrovich on May 16 1925. Survived by wife two daughters two sons an adopted grandson nine grandchildren and five sisters in Michigan Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Funeral services for Eskil E Shogren age 48 were held Saturday at Sharon Lutheran Church with Rev. Mark Wickstrom officiating. He died from injuries sustained unloading logs at Steiger Lumber Co. Burial was at Hillcrest Cemetery. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers included church and community members. Relatives traveled from Iron Mountain Ironwood Crystal Falls Ramsay and Aurora among others.
