Speed Boys Falter In Late Stages To Drop Pair Of Thlts

The Bessemer Speed Boys lost to the Wakend Cardinals 42 40 after surrendering a 22 point lead in a Michigan Wisconsin conference game at A D Johnston gym. Ray Berg scored 14 and Dave Nemacheck 11 as Bessemer faded late, missing free throws and dropping their final period 4 0.

Swimming Pool Fund Tops 1124 60 This Week

The swimming pool drive reached 1124.60 with this week’s Games Party earning 42.40 and transfers from Bessemer Conservation Club into the fund. Donations from Paul Hoeft and others added several dollars. The next Games Party is set for Monday February 7 with other events listed such as dances and party receipts through December.

Bessemer Band to Stage Mid Winter Concert Next Tuesday

The Bessemer City Schools instrumental program led by Richard Freeley will present its annual mid winter concert on Tuesday February 3 at 7 p.m. in Washington School gymnasium. About 65 musicians from A D Johnston High School and Washington School bands will perform swing novelties folk tunes overtures and a modern symphonic band suite. The concert is open to students and the community with a second showing for Washington and Barber school students at 10 a.m. the next day.

Community swimming pool fundraiser games night noted

The Veterans Memorial building hosted a community swimming pool fundraiser Monday night earning 42.40. Master prize donated by Sears Roebuck Co. went to Mrs. Frank McMinn of Bessemer. Volunteers and donors listed. next games party set for February 9 at 8 p.m. with groceries as prizes and a gallon of interior paint as master prize.

Charles Anderson Dies WWII Veteran in La Mesa

Charles Anderson 79 a World War II veteran died January 12 in La Mesa California where he had lived for 15 years. Born September 10 1879 in Norway he moved to Bessemer with parents and later worked for Oliver Iron Mining Co and as a shovel demonstrator. He married Anna Ramstad of Bessemer September 29 1900 and leaves two sons Carl and Conrad and daughters Mrs William Herchey and Mrs William Cooney eight grandchildren and a brother Harold of Bessemer. Funeral services were held January 15 in La Mesa and remains cremated.

VFW to Sponsor Public Card Party

A card party open to the public will be held Saturday February 7 at the VFW clubrooms. Proceeds benefit VFW auxiliary relief work and Fuel. Eagles Auxiliary members will staff the event. Harold Hoffner chairs the Kommunity Karnival and reports multiple organizations have agreed to cooperate including Home Extension Club Bessemer Fire Department American Legion Auxiliary The Eagles and others. Donations for Karnival booths are requested from those contacted and remaining calls to gather house to house article pickups are listed with contact names and phone numbers. Washington Junior High staff receive praise for coverage of the swimming pool project in Green & Gold. Toivo S Riutta 44 a World War II veteran was found dead in his room triggering an inquiry by the coroner who ruled death by personal safety related strangulation. Surviving siblings and brothers are listed. Funeral arrangements are set for Friday at Keto la Funeral Home with Rev Oliver Hallberg officiating.

The Powder Horn Mountain ski project in Gogebic county moves forward as Walter Kalata land is secured by option. Barrington businessman Jack English will meet local leaders to advance plans for lifts and facilities, anticipating thousands of skiers once operational.

Trinity Lutheran Church Installs New Officers and Elders

Officers and church council members of Trinity Lutheran Church were installed last Sunday. Irwin Shave became president for one year, replacing the late Samuel Chovan. Others installed include John Holo vac as vice president, George Sakalas as secretary, Norman Berg as treasurer, and William McKie as financial secretary. Elders John Parobek and Sam Chovan for one year, plus George Bretall, John Chovan and Frank Evsich for two year terms. Trustees Orlo Carlson and Paul Parobek for one year. Bessemer Chamber Elects Officers for 1959 Term

The Bessemer Chamber of Commerce held its organization meeting Monday electing William A. Hansen as president and Mae Johnson as vice president. Directors named include Henry Lind berg Peter Relich Edward Strahs Elmer Oas Frank Keniny and Isadore Maccani with over terms for 1959. A membership drive was set with Frank Keniny named membership chairman and secretary to notify members about renewal dues. Plans cover promoting the Gogebic County booth at the Chicago Sports Show for a ten day March display and coordinating exhibit space with the City Council. The Wakefield Memorial Building display date of February 12 was noted to prepare the G ogebic County booth.

George St John Found Dead Near His Home Saturday

George St John aged 54 died Saturday about 6 30 p m of a self inflicted gunshot in his head with a 22 caliber rifle. He was found at the rear entrance of his home on Black River Road North Bessemer. Despondent over ill health, he was born in Bessemer November 15 1904 and operated the family farm since his father’s death. He wed Anna Kutrovich on May 16 1925. Survived by wife two daughters two sons an adopted grandson nine grandchildren and five sisters in Michigan Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Eskil E Shogren laid to rest after fatal lumber yard accident

Funeral services for Eskil E Shogren age 48 were held Saturday at Sharon Lutheran Church with Rev. Mark Wickstrom officiating. He died from injuries sustained unloading logs at Steiger Lumber Co. Burial was at Hillcrest Cemetery. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers included church and community members. Relatives traveled from Iron Mountain Ironwood Crystal Falls Ramsay and Aurora among others.

Teenage dance planned at Veteran's Memorial in Bessemer

The Bessemer Woman's Club sponsors a teenage dance at the Veteran's Memorial building on Friday January 30 starting at 8 p m. Dick Williamson provides the music. Refreshments will be sold by club members and chaperones will be club members.

Mr and Mrs Clarence Ethier of Atlanta visited in this city at Mrs William Lesters home in early January. On their return they called at Mr and Mrs Norbert Achatz home in Eveleth Minnesota. The Ethier name was omitted in an earlier Herald item.
