Michigan State Banking Commissioner reports the twenty second annual bank survey. There are 399 state banks and five trust companies with total deposits 261,587,999.33. Savings deposits show the greatest gain, and net earnings total 18,804,020.98.
Mrs. C. A. Pratt of Marenisco left Tuesday evening for Chicago where she will undergo an operation. She was accompanied by Mr. Pratt who will remain with her a couple of weeks.

Regular meeting of the Bessemer common council on January 15 1911 in the council chamber with Mayor Becker presiding. A special committee on sinking well reported the hole at 150 feet shows water but must be tested for resupply before sinking. board of public works authorized to conduct thorough testing. The council accepted the report and confirmed the committee action. The bill from the Electric Light Co was approved and paid in the usual manner. Meeting adjourned by City Clerk Win L Guyer.
Upper Peninsula Representatives vow strong opposition to a proposed tax on mining. The bill would impose one half cent per pound of copper and fifteen cents per ton of iron ore, with monthly production reports, penalties for false statements, and a state treasury allocation to general expenses. The measure targets copper and iron ore producers statewide.
The Modern Brotherhood of America installed officers at the regular Wednesday meeting in the Odd Fellows Hall. Officers include President A. E. Church, Vice President Mrs. E G Peterson, Conductress Mrs. B W Petling, Secretary Treasurer Rose Burt, Chaplain Mrs. A E Church, Physician Dr. K A Parasis, Watchman E W Felling, and Sentry Win. Roberts.
Local ticket agents report cargo lines warning immigrants arriving at United States or Canadian ports must carry money on arrival or risk detention and possible entry denial. The ruling does not specify a required amount but notes a minimum of at least 25.
If Judge Williams sustains his decision, the ruling would overturn the claim that historic treaties bar sale of intoxicating liquor to whites near Indian reservations in Minnesota Wisconsin and upper Michigan. Government agents have long closed many saloons in northern Minnesota and on the Mesaba range.
Detroit dispatch reports Representative John Holland of the district attends the Lansing session proposing a bill to tax mineral reservations. Once backed by mining bosses, the move now gains administration support and likely at least half the House members from the Upper Peninsula may back it. Holland sits on Education, Upper Peninsula Hospital for Insane, and Public Lands and Forestry committees.

The Brotherhood of American Women installed officers at Baroquist Hall last Monday evening. Foreman Aug Prost M of Jos Beisel, Physician Mrs Chas Savw, Correspondent W J Pascoe. A turkey supper and dance followed with a large crowd, described as a most enjoyable time.
Incomna Washington dispatch reports heavyweight Jack Lester knocked out Ice Muldoon of Seattle in the fourth round of a scheduled ten round bout on Wednesday night. Muldoon saved in the second and third rounds after twelve knockdowns. Lester’s next meeting is with Ed Martin in Tacoma on January 31.
Charles H Watson resigns as prosecuting attorney of Iron County after ten years in office. A former Mauistiqune man, he worked on papers there long ago. He has been appointed Michigan solicitor for the Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul Railway and attorney for Corrigen-McKinney interests.
John Klavincki of this city was fined $20 and costs for killing a pet deer. He was arrested by Deputy Jame Warden Claude Larson of Ironwood.
The Republican State Central Committee calls a Michigan convention to meet in Saginaw on Thursday March 2 1911 at 11 am to nominate two Supreme Court justices a four year superintendent and university board members among others The delegation from every county depends on votes for the Republican candidate for secretary of state The district delegates meet at 9 30 pm and officers are named for confirmation including a vice president assistant secretary and several committee members.
