Speed Boys Lose Sixth Rough Friday at Ironwood
The Bessemer Speed Boys dropped their 14th straight this season 67 to 41 at Luther L. Wright Gym in Ironwood. Ironwood Red Devils surged 24 to 7 in the third quarter, led 23-11 after the first, and pulled away early in the fourth before reserves played. Martini led Bessemer with 10, Farrell and Pakonen paced Ironwood with 21 and 4 assists.

Son of Bessemer Residents Honored as Man of the Year
Gilbert F. Bradley of Tucson Arizona has been named 1963 Man of the Year by the Tucson Advertising Club. Bradley, VP and area manager of Valley National Bank, chaired the 1963 United Community Campaign. He is the son of Mrs and the late Ever Bradley, longtime residents of the Ironton location in Bessemer Township.

Mrs Julia Kacala aged 82 of Montreal died Sunday February 23 at Grand View Hospital after two weeks admission. Born April 12 1881 in Radaster Pelamd she was mother to Mrs Stella Pruc ca of Bessemer and widow of a husband who died in 1962. Her son Peter was killed in the Normandy invasion. A Sacred Heart Church member, she had 19 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Funeral 10 am Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church with Rev Richard Lang officiating. Entombment followed at Hurley Mausoleum.

Funeral services held for H Mahonen
Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p m for Henry Mahonen 73 of North Bessemer who died February 19 at Gogebie Hospital Wakefield where he had been a patient for 15 months. Rev Rudolph Kemppainen of Wakefield officiated with interment at Hillcrest Cemetery. Pallbearers were Arthur Erickson Herman Rookala Axel Tenlen Tauno Hedberg William Juni and Henry Korhonen. Relatives from out of town included Raynor Spencer and son Craig Minneapolis Mrs Nante Holappa Mrs Mary Simmons Mr and Mrs Edward Ammela Mr and Mrs Herman Rookala and Mrs William Bjork Ironwood. Mahonen born January 15 1891 in Kivijari Muhalankyla Vaasan Laani Finland immigrated to the United States in his teens and settled in Bessemer where he worked in iron ore mines and later became a self employed commercial fisherman operating in Lake Superior off Black River Harbor until the harbor project began, then he moved to Ontonagon and later North Bessemer in 1959. He had been in failing health. He was not married and is survived by one sister Mrs Inunen Ironwood and two brothers Charles of Newberry and Victor of Portland Ore.

John W. Johnson Sr. 75, veteran businessman and longtime Bessemer resident, died of a heart seizure Feb 20 while parking at his home. A former police chief and Gogebic County sheriff, he founded the Johnson Pop Shop and later Bessemer Sanitary Bottling Works, retiring in 1956. He was a lifelong Packers fan and Seaton Lutheran member, survived by his wife Sophie, three daughters, one son, nine grandchildren, and five siblings. funeral was Monday at Frick Zielinski Funeral Home.
