Bessemer township nominates candidates in 11 contests for the March 1 primary. Polls open 7 a.m. at Ram say and Puritan. close 6 p.m. Forty candidates compete for supervisor, treasurer, highway roles, justice of the peace, board of review, park commissioners, and constables with both parties fielding nominees in most races.
The Minnesota administration outlined bills to boost iron ore tax values from 200 to 400 percent. Three measures by Rep Eastvold and Rep Hagen aim to base valuations on ore gross worth at the mine, ending the Lake Erie price basis, and to raise the occupational tax from 6 to 8 percent.
Richard Allen of Bessemer and fellow senior electrical student James Gibson are drafting a constitution and by laws for the Michigan Tech chapter of Eta Kappa Nu, the national electrical engineering honor fraternity. The Tech chapter originated in Pi Lambda Kappa, whose constitution needs revision for national purposes.
August Litkanen deputy treasurer of Gogebic county and former Bessemer township clerk died after a blizzard. He walked from a stalled car near Grand View hospital and froze from exposure. Survived by widow Esther Leppala and three children Alvin Elaine and Gloria, with extended family. Funeral set for Bessemer township home and St Pauls Finnish Lutheran Church Ironwood.
A special election will be held April 15 in the Wakefield township school district to determine the five year tax rate for local education. Voters are asked to establish a 12 mill rate, lower than the past five year average, replacing current allocations under county board decisions and a 1933 taxpayer vote whose agreement expires next year. The school board believes 12 mills will fund operations efficiently for the next five years.
Lansing officials warn buyers, especially from individuals, to inspect titles for correct serial and engine numbers matched by car stampings. Some cases involved buyers or sellers unaware a stolen car was being traded. If traced, such cars are returned to rightful owners despite prior confessions or transfers.
Joe Michela of Bessemer, Mich leads a new outfit to reopen Washburn Wisconsin coal dock for summer shipments to Chequamegon Bay region and Michigan iron range. Self unloading boats carry about 6000 tons. dock to be repaired by city laborers and later replanked with bins and conveyors. Mayor Hans J. Thompson says repairs incentivize the project, with operations tied to boat cargoes of automobiles and potential marine activity this summer.
Congressman Frank Hook introduced a bill in the House to build a veterans hospital at Gladstone for 10 000 to 12 000 UP veterans served by Wisconsin units. Frank T Hines Federal Board of Hospitalization says studies do not yet justify a new facility but may issue recommendations if needs arise. Cox Iron River commander says legislation is required and the measure awaits House committee action.
Bessemer schools received 2632 in primary funds and 5985 from the equalization fund under Thatcher Sauer act, totaling 8617. Bessemer township got 2500. Gogebic county districts total 71777, distributed as Erwin township 300, Ironwood township 6096, Ironwood city 42054, Marenisco 1271, Wakefield township 9686, Watersmeet 1254.
Fat Hanson is named registrar at Hill Military Academy in Portland Oregon. He will oversee pupil registration and extension work. Hanson and his wife have been residing in Portland since moving there last fall.
Michigan’s oil and gas fields produced nearly twelve million barrels of crude oil and seven billion cubic feet of natural gas in 1936 as the aggregate production.
A dispatch notes Hjalmer Turpeinen Bessemer logging contractor was alleged to issue worthless checks totaling 31000 in Iron River area with complaints from six local businesses. Reports say sheriff's officers pursued him. later Iron River Reporter states a warrant was withdrawn and all claims paid, matter closed.
A fierce blizzard hit the Gogebic range from Saturday night to Tuesday, dropping two more feet of snow and creating 12 foot drifts. Winds caused zero degree temperatures as the county road commission deployed 25 trucks and six workers to clear highways, while schools closed due to impassable rural roads and drifts. Auto traffic stalled, mail routes failed, and several accidents including one death occurred as passenger trains lagged and freight trains were canceled.
Effen Richardson formerly of Bessemer later of Hibbing Minnesota and Chicago Illinois died February 1 at Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago after twelve years with arthritis. She is survived by her mother Mrs. Augusta Richardson and siblings Frank Edna Richardson Mrs Joseph Elwood and Mrs Harry Slack all of Chicago.
Dr. Eugene B. Elliott state superintendent warns that Michigan should hire teachers trained in state, not from Minnesota or Wisconsin. Campaign notes discuss replacing elected officials with appointive boards for judiciary and state education, with aims to curb partisan politics and empower the governor to select and fix terms.
Ward Nordling of Verona was bound over to the circuit court for trial by Justice A J Gedda on charges of breaking into the Bordeau store at Verona and stealing merchandise and $4. He faces an additional charge of attempting to break into the David Rizzie Red White store at Verona. Nordling was committed to the county jail with bail set at $1,000.
The funeral of the late Mrs Frances Ceno was held Tuesday morning at St Sebastian Catholic Church with Rev Nolan McKevitt officiating. Interment followed in Hillcrest cemetery. Pallbearers named Battista Mussatti Joseph Ochis Joseph Oletti James Boggio Robert Raccoon and Bernard Devietti.
Bessemer’s Monday primary focuses on the Citizens ticket with eight contests and 17 candidates. Liberty has no primary. Polls run 7 am to 6 pm with wards voting at prior sites. several incumbents face Citizens opponents while Liberty fields candidates for April challenges.
Ironwood schedules an April 5 election for three city commissioners and three at large supervisors. Incumbents John B. Chappell and E. A. Ravey Jr. seek four year terms as two supervisors face a vacancy from Abner W. Holmberg’s death. The group of at large supervisors includes Adolph Mueller George W. Sawyer and W. W. Woodward who is city manager. Also noted, White bass are protected in Lake Michigan and cannot be commercially fished, while hook and line anglers may harvest them.
