John Fat Chiebowski of Ramsay won the nomination for township supervisor in Bessemer by carrying both precincts on the February 19 primary. Edwin Smith placed second, Peter Paitolero third, and Nesto Erickson fourth. Belmont Wilkins won township treasurer easily in a field of five. Lawrence Gaudette was re-nominated as township clerk without opposition. John Hanisek and Carl Sjoman Jr. were named Justice of the Peace for four years. All other offices were uncontested.

Funeral Services for J Soffietti
Funeral services were held Monday for Joseph Soffietti 51 who died in a mine accident at the Geneva mine last Thursday. He was born in Fiano Italy on June 20 1893 and married to Mrs Jennie Soffietti in 1921 at Wakefield. Surviving are his widow three sons six brothers and a sister in Italy. Burial was at Hillcrest with pallbearers named and relatives from Chicago Peoria and Kingsco present.

Local Rifle Team Places Ninth in Hearst Contest
The A. D. Johnston high school ROTC rifle team placed ninth in a 101-team field in the William Randolph Hearst ROTC rifle contest for Sixth Service Command. Individual scores climbed with Marcellino Calabro totaling 182, Kenneth Kuivinen 1280, Rudy Lucas 177, Calvin Olsen 167, and Richard Hunt 158. The team tally reached 864 with several teammates named among participants. Coach is Szt. Gregorek, directed by Major Hawkins.

The rescuers reached him at 12 o'clock noon and during the eight hours of entrapment he received double pay from the company. Mr Stancher’s body was found hours later after the cavern incident. Cpl Bernard E. Modjewski 26 son of Mrs Frances Modjewski was killed in action in Belgium on January 31. He served with an anti aircraft unit for over three years and was overseas 30 months. Born April 14, 1918 in Bessemer, he had worked in Detroit before enlisting. Survived by mother sister Mrs Joseph Zawlecki and brothers Adam and Chester, all of Bessemer.

Sessemer sergeant Rovet A Brown of the 168th Infantry, Fifth Army in Italy earned the Silver Star for bold action under heavy fire. Crawling within 15 yards of a hostile machine gun he charged, fired a submachine gun, and killed three Germans, leading his squad to take the objective and capture prisoners.

He previously was wounded July 5 in France and spent three months in an English hospital before returning to action.
