On Wednesday February 20 at 1 am the quadrennial weighing of United States mails began in Michigan Wisconsin and Minnesota. The government requires weighing and classification of all mail to fix railroad compensation. The process lasts ninety days with Sundays off.
With spring approaching truants rise and Truant Officer Rowett works to return youngsters to classes. Parents who ignore attendance laws face prosecution and possible court action while habitual truants may be sent to the state Industrial school at Lan sing. The authorities vow to strictly enforce compulsory education laws in Bessemer.
Miss Bessie Beaty of Ironwood visits Miss Emma Kulasovicz while Mrs Bayliss and Mr and Mrs Frank Chliblowski are noted Ironwood visitors Friday. Dora Veslak of this city undergoes appendicitis surgery at Gebobic Hospital on the 16th inst and is recovering. J A Vogtlin returns from Rockland reporting his mother’s condition much improved.
A dispatch to the Evening Wisconsin reports W J Dougherty, train dispatcher for the Ashland division of the Northwestern road, may be committed to an asylum after a wreck at Van Buskirk that killed two. He had only five days in the dispatchers office at the time, and officials had questioned his fitness for the position.
The Wisconsin Central will implement a voluntary fare reduction to 24 cents per mile from 8 cents, with 500 mile family books at $10. President W A Bradford Jr led the announcement, and J C Pond stated the goal to offer the lowest fares in Wisconsin to boost travel and regional development despite expected revenue losses.
Boston February reports Calumet and Hecla Mining company will take charge of Osceola Centennial and Allouez mining firms under Michigan law. Majority stock of Centennial and Allouez acquired, 20000 Osceola shares transferred to Calumet interests. Jas Hilligan called to Appleton by his father’s death.
Telegrams from a railway station master to division HQ report an abundance of lions in central Africa. One plea asks for more police protection as men grow cautious when lions roar, and another requests prioritizing a morning train run despite signals due to a lion at the bottom of the post.
The state railway rate commission ordered North Western Milwaukee and St Paul and Omaha lines to reduce passenger fares from 3 to 2 cents per mile, effective in 20 days with an appeal window. Burlington and Wisconsin Central not decided. The commission suggested a 500 mile book for 10, valid one year, to test traffic. Wisconsin Central officials say competition will push it to adopt the 2-cent rate.
Observations by Edwin B Frost at Yerkes Observatory report unusually active sun with large sun spots of 80 000 miles diameter and six groups. Prominences extended up to 100 000 miles as hydrogen helium and calcium gases erupted, aligning with aurora activity seen on Earth in recent nights.
The Bessemer storekeepers are congratulated for three weeks of evening closures with only one exception. The note argues that if a large city like Chicago can train shoppers to finish by 6 pm, Bessemer and others can adopt the same habit by coordinated effort and consistent closures.
Joseph H. Smith of Marquette argues in a Mining Journal letter for revised deer and hog hunting rules. He urges opening deer season in October, restricting licenses by county, funding game wardens, and limiting cross strait hunting, contending earlier openings lead to more deaths and wasted meat. He notes trout season disputes and calls for cautious, sport aligned regulations.
In the upper peninsula reports indicate counterfeit nickels circulating. The forgeries resemble Uncle Sam’s issue but are lighter in weight and lack proper engraving. Counterfeiting has risen for small denominations while larger notes and gold pieces remain difficult to imitate.
The Anti saloon league led by C L W Rutledge Ishpeming plans a state bill to widen local option to counties townships villages and cities. Rev George W Morrow heads the state effort as supporters push a conservative measure requiring one third of electors to petition before any local option vote.
A fragmented telegraph digest reports a morning fire at Ashlund Iron and Steel plant in Asiland with loss of 104 million dollars. It notes government appointments in Lansing with Henry M Zimmerman named state banking commissioner, and MelL d reappointed Labor Commissioner. Also headlines a deadly detonator blast near Louisville where four workers died, a mining stock surge in the Upper Peninsula, a Polish miner Zabrowski family in Fork Ridge, severe Italy weather disrupting telegraph lines, and a Boston Athletic Association shot put world record of 63 feet inches set by WLW Coe.
The Estates Cazette observes that most landowners are poor and survive by strict economies or by accruing charges on their estates. It notes the average squire is now the least extravagant man in the country.
New York report of a sudden New York Central electric train derailment at 205th street near Webster avenue on the Harlem division. Sixteen killed and forty five injured as the White Plains Local rolled over after leaving Grand Central at 6 15 pm. Victims described as ground to pieces and one woman impaled on a railroad tie fragment.
The Arcade Arizona is organizing as a new mining company with Bessemer and nearby towns supporting it. Incorporators include Dr George J Loupe Ingh F Edard M A Fitzsimmons Grant S Barber and M M Riley. The prospectus lists 16 claims in the Silver Belt district about 42 miles from Tucson totaling 320 acres with copper gold and silver values per ton ranging from 6 to 275. The land sits beside Amalgamated Copper and Imperial Mining lands. Imperial hosts a large rich mine. Details on organization plans share pricing and other investor information are in the prospectus.
Democrats of Gogebic County are called to meet at A. W. Peterson’s office in Ironwood on Monday February 25 1907 at 3 PM to elect two delegates to the Democratic state convention in Flint on February 28 1907 and to handle lawful business. Levi S. Rice editor A. W. Peterson secretary.
The circuit court adjourned last Monday until the 25th due to the serious illness of a relative of Judge Cooper who was at his bedside in Detroit.
