Storm delays trains as Milwaukee endures worst blizzard in twenty years
A fierce snow storm with a 40 mile gale struck Milwaukee and southern points, delaying mail trains five to nine hours and halting streetcar service. Two feet of snow and strong winds created deep drifts that stalled engines, while authorities employed shovelers to clear tracks and residents stayed indoors. Large scale layoffs hit Colby and Ironton mines
Corrigan, Mc Kinney & Co. orders reduce the work force at the Colby and Ironton mines amid a bleak ore market outlook. About 120 Colby miners are laid off, mostly single men. Ironton repairs will take two weeks, then gradual hiring resumes. Married workers with families are kept employed, and output cuts aim to halve production until after the presidential election. Many laid-off workers have already sought work elsewhere.
