Mrs Alfred J Carlson a pioneer resident died Saturday at 3 20 am in Grand View hospital after a five year battle with arterial disease and a stroke The Swedish born Edna Johnson she came to the city in 1899 and married Alfred Carlson in 1902 at Sharon Lutheran church Funeral services Monday at 2 pm at Sharon Lutheran with Rev Mark Wickstrom and burial in Hillcrest cemetery Surviving are six sons two daughters 29 grandchildren and several brothers and sisters including Carl H Carlson C H Carlson Oscar Gustafson and Arvid Carlson among others from Ironwood Superior Ramsay and New Lisbon Wis and Cupertino Cal Local relatives attended the services

Milo Barnaby Wins Bond in Contest at Range Theater
Milo Paul Barnaby son of Mr and Mrs William Barnaby won a 25 bond as first prize in a contest sponsored by a range theater. He beat 150 other children and is now eligible to compete in a national contest.

Renowned Anvil resident Paul Chernak Sr. dies at 72
Paul Chernak Sr. 72, a well known Anvil Pioneer and former mining shift boss, died Monday at his home after a year of ill health. Born March 16, 1879 in Klenovec Czechoslovakia he came to the United States at 18, worked in Pennsylvania railroads, then joined Pickands Mather at the Anvil Mines. He retired in 1950 and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Slavish Society of Anvil. Surviving are his wife Mary Antel, a daughter Marion Kitts of New Hampshire, two sons Pam Jr. of Anvil and John of Hurley, eight grandchildren. Funeral Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church with burial in Hillcrest cemetery.

Reverend Swoboda Dies After Long Heart Ailment
The Rev. Carles J. Swoboda 78, pastor of St. Sebastian church in this city for 50 years, died Friday morning after a year of declining health. Born in 1873 in Leobschuetz, he studied in Europe, was ordained in 1902, and led extensive parish expansion including a school opened in 1921. Funeral Mass drew about 1,500 at St. Sebastian's with Bishop Noa and dozens of priests aiding in rites.

Stock Car Racing To Use Gogebic County Fairgrounds
Gogebic county board approved a lease with Land of Lakes Racing Association Rhinelander Wis to use Ironwood fairgrounds one day weekly for three summers May 1 to October 1 with option for one more year The association will pay 1.50 per season and must build its own track install fences lighting and safety devices and maintain the facility Stock car racing uses jalopy type cars and draws many enthusiasts each year.

The Bessemer Chamber of Commerce named officers for the year in a regular session. Joseph Abelman was elected president with John Novascone as vice president Louis Obradovich as secretary and John Dimperio as treasurer. The board of directors includes Arnold Schmidt John Novascone Frank Barnich Dante PriccoRobert Obradovich Elmer Oas Rudolph Honz John Dimperio Lawrence Martin Jr and Joseph Abelman. By-law amendments set membership fees by establishment size with $24 for large, $12 for small and $5 for professional and associate members. Any community citizen may join as an associate member. The memberships committee led by John Novascone was authorized to classify establishments accordingly.

Mrs. J Finnegan Dies Suddenly in Ironwood Home
Mrs John Finnegan aged 66 died Monday afternoon at 2 50 at her Iron Street home from a cerebral hemorrhage. Born in Antigo June 24 1885 she lived in Bessemer Ramsay and later settled in this city. Surviving are her husband four sons one daughter a brother and a large extended family. Funeral services will be held Friday at St Sebastian's church with burial in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Jacobson Wins Nomination In Liberty Primary Victory
Albert Jacobson led with 517 votes to clinch the Liberty party nomination for mayor in Monday’s primary. Charles Mascotti trailed with 317, Michael DeStasio 287, Irwin Neault 167, and Joseph Stelmark 162. Incumbent Louis Obradovich won city clerk, Mrs. E Genevieve Johnson ran unopposed for treasurer, and several ward races filled council seats with notable upsets in the second ward and a vacancy in the third ward. Oscar Cossi faces April opposition for fifth ward supervisor while Paul Contratto and Leonard Gayan contest the fourth ward alderman seat.
