Bessemer High School reports 396 students this year doubling space strain. Built in 1907 to serve about 200, the campus now needs an addition and remodeling to accommodate rising enrollments from 135 in 1915 to 372 in 1930, with 1931 expected to top 1930.
The Lake Superior District Power Company completed a 12 mile transmission line from Wakefield to Marenisco. The route is more direct than the old highway and will supply power to Bonifas Lumber’s Marenisco planing mill. The line links with Marenisco to Winegar and Lake Gogebic to Merriweather at the lake’s north.
Michigan Bell Telephone Co distributed souvenir directories in the district listing names and addresses of out of town relatives of local subscribers, plus their phone numbers and long distance rates. Local operators had previously secured similar data from relatives of subscribers in other cities for the directory. The book also provides space for additional addresses and numbers.
John S. Muncaster deputy collector of internal revenue will be at the court house in Bessemer next Monday and Tuesday Feb 23 and 24 to assist taxpayers in filing their 1930 income tax returns, he states in a letter to the Herald this week.
Bessemer High School plans two tough road games to finish the regular season. Tonight Coach McCune and Sar toris take the Bees to Hurley aiming to repeat a 27 to 13 win. Ironwood visit Wednesday seeks revenge after a 21 to 15 defeat and DePadua Catholic lurks next Friday for a season closer.
The Peter Gedda Post No 27 of the American Legion sponsors a Washington Day program at 8 pm in the A D Johnston high school auditorium on Saturday evening February 21. Capt A B Pence chairs the event with speaker Dc R Cobb, Bessemer City Schools superintendent, discussing The National Unrest. Robert R Wright of Ironwood discusses the Legion Americanization program. Music by the high school orchestra directed by Harry Reinhold. The Legion and Auxiliary will attend in a body. Public invited.
Mrs. Jerry Sandy died Saturday evening at Grand View hospital after a long illness with pulmonary tuberculosis. Funeral held Tuesday morning at St Sebastian's church with Rev C J Swoboda officiating. Born in Italy on April 2 1864 she came to this city 39 years ago. Survived by two daughters Mrs Del Fiacco of St Paul and Mrs Apleton Adams of Bessemer and three grandchildren. Casket borne by John and Joseph Scavarda Charles Camilli Joseph Scutella Louis Baklini and Rocco Sofio.
Prosecuting Attorney O'Brien reports a warrant has been issued for Babe Reedy the former deputy register of deeds and book keeper in Alger County road commission offices during L. E. Adams tenure as engineer. An alleged shortage of 401.88 in fees paid to the register of deeds prompted the action, urged by taxpayers. Reedy, once a popular local book keeper, is now missing with Indiana once suspected as a location. The warrant will be served once she is located.
Voters in Ashland county will decide at the spring election on April 7 whether to continue the Ashland county fair. Fair officials are seeking to submit the issue to county voters after the county board in November refused further financial aid. The board had donated old buildings and equipment to the Ashland County Agricultural Society to sponsor a fair despite funding gaps.
A number of Bessemer merchants plan a Dollar Day and Bargain Day next Saturday February 23 1931. The special sale events have drawn shoppers in the past and the first for 1931 will feature attractive discounts. Merchants will announce details next week.
Plans for a road relocation from Ramsar to Wakefield are approved with bidding soon to start. County engineer George Korenski reports the four mile route will improve county and state aid access, linking to Wakfield near the Little Black River and shortening the Bessemer and Wakefield corridor by about two miles. The project includes concrete paving, five grade crossings, three right-angle crossings, and several sharp curves to be eliminated.
A change in the registration and voting site for the Third Ward primary on March 2 moves to the Northwestern Motor Bus building from the Babicky building, which is padlocked. Registrations take place next Saturday February 28.
John Kardilas announces bid for constable in first ward with March 2 primary. The Bessemer Heralds take two of three from the Montreal Bees as Kinkmers fall to Montreal Hormets in three straight games. State fair plan to absorb current Western Michigan fair at Grand Rapids.
The Gogebic county board of supervisors will meet on Tuesday February 24 at the court house. This will be the first meeting since December. A contract with Sullivan Machinery Co of Chicago has been placed by Calumet and Hecla for 6200 feet of diamond drilling from an Osceola shaft.
A special meeting of the Bessemer Woman's club is called for Tuesday February 24 with F Elmer Hallberg landscape gardener of St Paul as guest speaker. The program arranged by the clubs conservation department includes an open discussion after Hallbergs gardening talk. Bain Cummins will perform a piano selection and invitation is extended to local men to attend.
Joan Horteg a 50 year old camp cook was found guilty of manslaughter by a circuit court jury. The verdict relates to the Dec 26 slaying of Stanley Nidolski at a lumber camp near Gogebic Station after a quarrel. Erick Pickmosa of Ironwood pleaded guilty to manslaughter this morning in a related case.
Net income for 1930 was 3,557,681.54 dollars, just 3 percent return on plant, down from 1929's 6,012,709.79. Telephones declined first time in company history with 195,331 installs and 208,549 disconnects, net loss of 13,218. In service at year end: 668,212 telephones.
