Berkovitz Appointed County Traffic Officer By Sheriff
David Berkovitz, a former Bessemer city police officer, was appointed Gogebic County deputy sheriff to fill the vacancy created by the revocation of George Georgie’s deputyship on December 5. Sheriff Frank T. Perlich made the appointment and notified the county board that he has the statutory right to appoint. The 1953 budget covers the deputy’s salary. The board, after discussion, adopted a motion to place the communication on file and heard Bulinski claim the prosecutor ruled county officers appoint their own deputies. A motion by Vispi directed the board to petition the state police for more area officers.

Apartment Damaged By Fire On Yale Avenue
The Charles Morris apartment at 901 Yale Ave was heavily damaged by water smoke and fire last Friday night. Firemen cut holes in the siding to reach the blaze which was controlled after two hours. The two-story home housed Mrs. John Melanen on the second floor who was not home. The origin is suspected to be spontaneous combustion of an oil mop near an oil heater.

Last Rites Held Saturday For Yale Resident
Mrs. Ely Hah tala aged 69 of Barber street died at Grand View hospital after years of heart illness. Born in Finland in 1883 she came to the U S in 1907 and lived in Ironwood before settling in Yale. She married Mr Heh tala in Ironwood in 1910 and was active in St Paul’s Lutheran Church Ladies Aid. Surviving are her husband two sisters two brothers and several in laws. Funeral was held Wednesday at St Paul’s Lutheran with entombment at Riverside cemetery. Pallbearers included Elmer Erickson Toivo Lustig Frank Makela Axel Maki Charles Hellanen and Andrew Jarvi. Out of town mourners listed from Chicago Waukegan Ashland and other areas.

Bessemer Soldier Joins 47th Armored Infantry Battalion
Pvt. Charles F. DeMarte, son of Mrs Dominic DeMarte of Bessemere Michigan, is assigned to Company C, 47th Armored Infantry Battalion, 5th Armored Division for basic training at Camp Chaffee Arkansas. He will spend eight weeks on soldiering fundamentals and infantry weapons, then eight weeks on artillery techniques with the 105 mm howitzer, before duty with an Army artillery unit. DeMarte is a Johnston High School graduate who attended Gogebic Junior College in Ironwood Michigan.
