County Roads Need Major Upgrades Across Michigan
A Michigan Highway Study finds nearly 480 miles of county and state roads in Gorgobic County are unsafe or congested and require $6,082,800 in fixes. Key projects include a four lane divided highway from Bessemer to Iron Mountain and upgrades to Class B and C county roads plus 52 miles of state and U S routes with several new bridges.

Funeral services for Steve Stanislaus Corda will be held Saturday morning at St Sebastian church with Rev C J Swo boda officiating. A Bessemer pioneer born in Germany, he died Tuesday in Duluth at age 91. Burial follows at Hillcrest cemetery after the Friday rosary at 8 p m. He lived with his daughter Mrs C D Hartman and leaves five sisters and three brothers, twenty five grandchildren and several great grandchildren. He worked at the Tilien mine prior to retirement in 1950.

Ben Bozich Dies During Tuesday at Home
Ben Bozich, 75, died at his Calby home after a lingering illness. He had spent five years in jail, and leaves a wife and two sons George of xfi and Anton of Cincinnati. Surviving sisters include Mrs. Anna Crotteau and Mrs. James Ovans of Milwaukee, plus Josephine. He was a member of the Teaching Sisters of the Order of St Agnes in Chicago. Funeral arrangements are being made by relatives.

In Monday’s primary, Crenna on the Citizen's ticket defeated Joseph Stelmark, third ward alderman, 267 to 159, and will face Mayor Ernest Shaw in April. Shaw, on Liberty, had 363 votes and earlier defeated Crenna last spring. Destasio edged Baratone for Supervisor 98 to 86 and will be unopposed in the April general. The April general slate lists Swanson 236, Baird 246, Sundquist 50, and other votes for local candidates.

Runeberg Lodge Marks Founding Anniversary
The Bessemer Runeberg lodge celebrates its golden anniversary at 8 p.m. Saturday in Veterans' Memorial auditorium with dancing music and refreshments. The observance honors Runeberg’s origin on February 5, 1898, and Johan Runeberg the Finnish poet after whom the lodge is named. The Swedish Finnish Benevolent and Aid association, started by 15 Bessemerites, merged with the Swedish Finnish Temperance group on August 20, 1920 to form the Order of Runeberg, now with 70 lodges in the U.S. and three in Canada, totaling 6,542 members. charter members listed include Victor Jacobson and others named.

The Most Rev. Angelo Negri, vicar apostolic of Equatorial Nile, spoke at St. Sebastian church in Bessemer recalling his homeland. He described 88 years in Africa, 65,000 converts since 1935, and a mission field of 35,000 square miles with one million people. He noted 18,000 students at the school, a printing press to be added, and a staff of 58 Italian missionaries, 50 sisters, 10 native priests, and 15 native sisters.
